PREDICTING Predicting is making guesses about what you are going to read. Use the information you learned from previewing and your own knowledge to make predictions about the reading. When you predict, you find out:

Finding the topic A topic is a word or phrase that tells what something is about. To find the topic of a reading ask yourself, “ What or who is the reading about.?” The answer will be the topic. You should always look for topic when you read. A topic is a word or phrase that tells what something is about. Paragraph A paragraph is a group of sentences about one topic. There is usually one sentences that tells you the topic. All the other sentences tell more about the topic

Main Idea A reading passage is usually about one important topic or idea. That is main idea. You can often find the main idea at the beginning of the reading and sometimes at the end. The rest of the reading often repeats, explains, and supports this main idea and gives specific examples.

If you have trouble figuring out the implied main ideas, you may find it helpful to use the following two questions: What is the topic or subject of a paragraph? In other words, what is the whole paragraph about? What is the main point being made about that topic”?
