Indiana High School Athletic Association Libero Player

LIBERO (LEE’-BAH-RO) A defensive specialist that wears a distinctive contrasting uniform from the other players on the team. The libero is limited in the actions they can perform. Actions the libero cannot perform: 1. Play front row – no blocking or attempting to block. 2. Serve 3. Complete an attack from anywhere on or off the court if the ball is completely above the height of the net. 4. A teammate cannot complete an attack from above the height of the net if the libero used fingertips to pass (set) the ball from in the attack zone.

Definitions Attack-Line: 2” Line 10’ from the net. Attack Zone: The zone in front of the attack-line including the 2” attack-line. Substitution Zone: The area on the sideline of the court nearest the scorer table and team bench, that includes the attack zone. Attack: Any action the sends the ball toward the opponent’s court. The teams’ third contact is always considered an attack. An attack is not complete until the ball completely crosses the plane of the net or is legally contacted by an opponent.

Different Number – No duplication Roster – Players’ number on the roster should be the regular uniform number Uniform: Different Color Jersey – complete & clear contrast The style may be different Shorts are the same, style and color Review Rules and 4-2-3: Nothing has changed with respect to the uniform numbers.

Entering the Game: Any time the libero enters the court or leaves the court it is called a, “ Libero Replacement.” This does not affect a team’s 18 substitutions. The libero replacement occurs between the attack-line (the line 10 feet from the net) and the end-line. Libero Number must be designated before each game on the line-up sheet. Preventive Officiating Observe a different color uniform but no libero designated on the line-up sheet.?

During the game – Only one libero replacement per dead ball. Before the whistle to authorize the next serve. 1. Once the libero player is in, they can only be replaced by the player they replaced. 2. The libero player can replace any of the three back row players, but cannot serve. At the start of the game – 1. 6 players that are listed on the line-up sheet are on the court. 2. Libero waits off-court for the umpire signal. The umpire first checks the regular six to ensure the proper serving order. When the signal is given, the libero replaces the regular player.

Libero Player Actions Cannot do the following: 1. Play front row. 2. Block or attempt to block. (Illegal block) 3. Serve. 4. Complete an attack hit from anywhere in the playable area, if at the time of contact the ball is completely above the height of the net. (Illegal attack)

Libero Player Actions Cannot do the following (Cont.): 5.Fingertip set a ball restriction: A teammate cannot complete an attack if, at the time of the contact, the ball is completely above the height of the net, and the libero used fingertip action to pass from in the attack zone. (Illegal backrow attack, then indicate the libero with extended arm and open hand)

Redesignation in case of Injured Libero Libero is injured and cannot continue play – the libero must first be replaced by the player whom she replaced. Redesignation may occur at any time after that. Does not have to be immediately, but rather at the discretion of the coach. Coach may choose any player not in the game as the new libero. The original libero, if replaced in this manner, may not play the remainder of that game. The player redesignated as libero must wear a libero uniform as described in the rules and must remain the libero for the rest of the game. The redesignated libero’s uniform must have a unique number (not worn by any teammate), and the same number with which the player started the match.
