EGEE-II INFSO-RI Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE and gLite are registered trademarks South-West Federation Gabriel Amorós (CSIC)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation Partners: –CSIC (SPAIN) –Red.es (SPAIN) –LIP (PORTUGAL) Partner introduction Activities within EGEE-II South-West Federation 2

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- CSIC CSIC - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas  Largest scientific research institute in Spain. Experience in Grid projects and applications in several scientific areas.  Participating in EGEE-II with three institutes: IFIC (Valencia). IFCA (Santander). CNB (Madrid). South-West Federation 3

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- CSIC –Participation within EGEE-II:  SA1: Coordination and support for middleware deployment; first line support for operational problems in region (together with LIP); operate a subset of the essential regional Grid services; operate a subset of Grid services for infrastructure or VOs; participate in Grid security and incident response; VO, application, and user support (together with LIP)  NA2: Responsible (together with RED.ES) for dissemination in Spain by organizing events for key target groups and contacting and enrolling new user communities and resource centres.  NA3: Provide training sessions for Portugal and Spain and conduct induction of new usercommunities.  NA4: Participation in the porting and support of Biomedical applications on the EGEE Grid.Demonstration of pilot applications in data exchange and simulation.  SA3: testing and certification. South-West Federation 4

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- Red.es Red.es (SPAIN)  Public entity which belongs to the Spanish Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Commerce. The main duty of RED.ES is to promote the development of Information Society. For this purpose, RED.ES: manages the Registry for domain names under ".es" ( has put in place a "Telecom and Information Society Observatory” ( and advices the Government in matters related to these fields; manages several programs related to the promotion of the Information Society, such as “Internet for Schools" ( or "Internet for rural areas”( promotes the digitalization of the Spanish cultural heritage ( provides several e-government services to public administrations; and manages the Spanish NREN, RedIRIS ( ( South-West Federation 5

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- Red.es –Participation within EGEE-II:  SA1: Run essential regional Grid services; Grid security and incident response (including Grid incident response coordination, Security vulnerability and risk analysis, CA management and coordination of Joint Security Policy Group).  NA2: Responsible (together with CSIC) for dissemination in Spain by organizing events for key target groups and contacting and enrolling new user communities and resource centres.  NA3: Provide training sessions for Portugal and Spain and conduct induction of new user communities.  NA5: Support project activity on international cooperation especially through the organization of the European e-Infrastructure reflection group and the production of a series of e-Infrastructure White Papers and roadmaps. South-West Federation 6

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- LIP LIP (Portugal) –LIP focuses on particle physics and instrumentation technologies for radiation detection. These include embedded processors, data transmission equipment and data acquisition systems. It maintains a flexible portfolio of technology development, technology transfer and dissemination, which includes Positron Emission Mammography and Grid Computing. South-West Federation 7

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI SW Federation- LIP –Participation within EGEE-II:  SA1: ROC Management (together with PIC); pre-production test bed site; regional certification of middleware releases; Grid Operations and support (including first line support for operational problems in region, oversight and management of operational problems, running essential regional Grid services, weekly operator on duty support and Grid services for infrastructure or VOs); CA management; VO, application, and user support (together with CSIC); Interoperation.  NA2: Responsible for dissemination in Portugal by organizing events for key target groups and contacting and enrolling new user communities and resource centres.  NA3: Provide training sessions for Portugal and Spain and conduct induction of new user communities South-West Federation 8

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI General View SW Federation within EGEE-II Proposal: –CSIC will be a local NA2 partner for Spain, and will be responsible for translations, local media relations, a local EGEE- II website and events. –LIP will be the local NA2 partner for Portugal and will be responsible for translations, local media relations and a local EGEE-II website. LIP is also involved in the EELA project, which will facilitate contacts to Latin America, and has a close relationship with the Portuguese NREN (FCCN), which will help to address the Portuguese research community. –RED.ES will be a local NA2 partner for Spain, working closely with the other Spanish partner CSIC for local translations, local media relations, a local EGEE-II website and events. South-West Federation 9

10 Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Overview Personnel involved Disemination activities summary –Talks and presentations about EGEE in external events  External to EGEE organized events  As a part of EGEE events. User induction: Online dissemination activities South-West Federation

11 Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Conclusions I NA2 SW Federation contribution: 1.5 FTE Usually there are more people envolved with NA2. We reach to a large number of interested groups within the potential and de facto grid community. NA2 activites are related to other EGEE activities. Dissemination works on two ways: –The oportunities arrive to people: invitations to talks. –The oportunities are created: organizing events

12 Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-II INFSO-RI Conclusions II We use the oportunities and our strongness: –There are better results disseminating close to us. –We are experts, then we are invited. –We are the reference. The potential user community is an specialised community: the dissemination rules should be specialised. Any event is a good oportunity.
