EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 Enabling Grids for E-sciencE www.eu-egee.org EGEE and gLite are registered trademarks Training in EGEE-III and beyond Robin McConnell, NA3 Activity Manager EGEE08 - 22 September 2008

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 2 Future of Training in Europe This talk will cover: Beyond EGEE-II EGEE-III plans

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 3 Looking Ahead Environment unsure beyond April 2010 Unlikely to be Structured like EGEE –Federated Infrastructure Training will still be required: –System operators (Operation centres) –Application developers (developing programs using infrastructure) –Users (accessing services)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 4 Trainers power Virtuous Cycles Researchers Diagnosticians Designers User Induction Training Outreach Dissemination Successful Users User Registration Positive Referrals Application Developers Dissemination Developer Initial Training Application Developers At home on Grids Positive Referrals Developer Advanced Training New Grid Applications Pushing Limits Advanced Grid Applications Success Stories & Experts

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 5 Looking Ahead Trainers will continue to need: –Training (particularly new trainers) –Dissemination support –Shared experience of system changes –Passing info onto communities  Local  Across VOs –Support services  Infrastructure for Training Students need “easy access”  Training Material

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 6 Current Blueprint In future, universities adopt as normal duties –As Infrastructure develops/ Users adopt EGI Blueprint: Stepping stone –National/Regional (NGIs)  Provide majority of training provision –Central (EGI.org)  Assist with Coordination  Facilitate sharing of resources/expertise

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 7 Role of National/Regional (NGIs) Material Creation, live or broadcast events, provision of web based materials Maintain local repositories, OLE Support regional t-Infrastructure –Coordination & interoperation –Operations at site level Manpower –Small – 1-2 FTE –Medium – 2-3 FTE –Large – 3-5 FTE

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 8 Role of Central (EGI.org) Coordination of NGI efforts Training Material –Gathering technical information –Create content Support central services –Material repositry –Online resources Support t-Infrastructure –interoperation –Management of grid central services Manpower –4 FTE

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 9 Training Activity in EGEE-III What are EGEE doing to prepare? NA3 Training & Induction aim: “stimulate and support the development of training provision mechanisms associated with the emerging National and Regional Grid organisations, which will form the future structures to support local training provision.”

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 10 Issues to be addressed Sustainability –NGIs self-sufficient –Increase number of Trainers Scalability –Large increase users -> Strain on resources

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 11 Sustainability Organise Train the trainer events –To develop base of trainers as legacy (Sustainability) –2 in Quarter 1 EGEE Trainer Registry –Initial list compiled –Online registry in development –Useful for training event organisers  Skills  Location

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 12 Trainer Registry

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 13 Trainer Registry

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 14 Scalability Expand the online learning services within EGEE-III – to meet the needs of:  an expanded project  larger user-base. Further development of digital library  New version due shortly  (Digital Library Booth / Training Support Services session – Wednesday)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 15 Digital Library (v2.0)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 16 Scalability GILDA t-Infrastructure –expanded range of training resources –cover an increasingly diverse range of application scenarios. Creation of online learning modules –Users subscribe to scheduled distance learning courses –Features  Online exercises (individual, group)  Forum based discussions (goals, outcomes, queries)  Assessments  Certifications?  Courses range from one-off presentations -> larger scale schools

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE EGEE-III INFSO-RI-222667 17 Summary Future still uncertain EGEE-III planning for environment with NGIs leading Training Providing support services required
