Fabrication and Testing Team Members Matthew Swanzy Project Manager Fabrication and Testing Victor Brewer Software Jordan Fedorchak Expandability Jason de Jongh Serial Communication Hunter Thompson Expandability “First I’d like to introduce my team, again I am Matthew Swanzy responsible for our fabrication and testing, this is Jason De Jongh he will doing our Matlab and Arduino serial communication, Victor Brewer who will be working on our software, Jordan Fedorchak whom once we get a base unit operating, will be working on our expandability meaning our stretch goals, she’ll be working on that along with our last team member Hunter Thompson.” Project # 1.8

Today’s Presentation Covers Motivation Description of Project Roles & Responsibilities Progress Plans for 2nd semester “For today’s presentation we’re going to first talk about some of the motivations behind our senior design project, then go over a description of our project we’ll discuss our individual roles and responsibilities, review our progress so far and lastly we will talk about our tasks for next semester.” Project # 1.8

Motivation The problem: Need: A multi functional device that can provide immediate alerts of potential hazards in order to quickly evaluate and resolve a situation before it escalates. No Dual-Use MEMS microphone system currently exists, only a handheld ultrasonic source detector. Why is this important? Testing the viability of using a MEMS microphone on board to serve multiple functions for the crew(e.g. speech processing and ultrasonic frequency detection) that will provide quick alert to hazards, along with an open communication system between the crew. “The motivation behind our senior design project is the need for a multifunctional device that can provide both quick alerts to potential hazards, due to ultrasonic frequencies being detected, and an open communication channel. There is currently no dual-use MEMS microphone system that performs these functions in fact the current ultrasonic detectors are all handheld devices. This project is important then because we can test the viability of using MEMS microphones to serve these multiple functions.” Project # 1.8

Motivation Why NASA is sponsoring this project? They would like a dual use monitoring system that will be stationary and run in real time to provide quick alerts of potential hazards and an audio channel for the crew. For deep space travel providing a system with lots of capability while reducing its power, weight and size is paramount. “That is why NASA is sponsoring this project. They want to see if a stationary device that uses MEMS microphones can monitor in real time for ultrasonic sources as well as provide a continuous open audio channel. For deep space travel having a system with lots of capability, such as what we are designing for this project, that requires minimal power and is relatively small in weight and size is critical.” Project # 1.8

Description of Project Stretch Goals of Project Goals of Project POC detection of ultrasonic frequencies (20 – 80 kHz) Distinguish between human voice (300-3400 Hz) and ultrasonic frequencies Sonification of ultrasonic frequencies Provide a communication channel Beam forming array Identify ultrasonic sources Improved User Interface “The main goals of our project are proof of concept for detection using MEMS microphones of ultrasonic frequencies also being able to distinguish between human voice, in the range of 300-3400 Hz, and ultrasonic frequencies, Sonification of ultrasonic frequencies, between 20 – 80 kHz, as well as provide a communication channel. Our stretch goals include a beam forming array, identification of specific ultrasonic sources, as well as creating an improved user interface.” Project # 1.8

Roles and Responsibilities Project Manager: Matthew Swanzy Schedule team meetings Communicate project progress with Dr. George Salazar from NASA, Dr. Harold Stern and Dr. Cecil Compeau Monitor project’s success Oversee all aspects of project to ensure all goals are accomplished and completed on time. Fabricate our system Test our system once complete “My roles and responsibilities as the project manager include scheduling team meetings, communicating project progress with our sponsor, Dr. George Salazar at NASA, as well as our technical mentors Dr. stern and Dr. Compeau, also monitoring our project progress, which includes overseeing all aspects of the project to ensure we are completing all our goals meeting our deadlines. And I will also be fabricating our system as well as testing it once it is complete.” Project # 1.8

Roles and Responsibilities Team Member: Jason de Jongh Research: Matlab and Arduino serial communication Establish serial communication between Matlab and Arduino Specs: MEMS Microphone connected to Arduino to gather signals. Arduino sends data to Matlab. Filtering desired signals within Matlab. Project # 1.8

Why this is a good Senior Design Project The DWMS Project: Involves multiple disciplines: software, mechanical, and electrical. Promotes hardware and software experience Integrates multiple components into a working system You should be able to spout off WHY your project is a GREAT senior design project at any moment, anywhere. Too many students cannot answer this question and it is important to be able to do so. Project # 1.8

Major Milestones Test Plan – 02/15/16 Characterization Report – 04/04/2016 Final Design Review – 04/11/2016-04/20/2016 Final Report – 04/25/2016 & Senior Design Day Presentation – 05/03/2016 Use the Master Schedule to fill in these dates. Project # 1.8

Constraints Economic: transducers that detect ultrasonic sound at a wider range and quality (above 80 kHz) are expensive whereas MEMS microphones are fairly inexpensive and easily available. Technical: the location detection and beam forming to pin point the source of the safety hazard requires a more complex system and time to implement it. This would provide a more accurate alert and would be good for future expansion. Consult your Functional Specification, and create a bulletized list of constraints. Time permitting, say how/why each constraint originates. Project # 1.8

Challenges & Concerns Ultrasonic attenuation High frequency signals lose intensity quickly due to high attenuation Producing controlled ultrasonic sources Most transducers have a fairly narrow bandwidth and high fall off rates Word this carefully – OK to ask questions and seek resolution during the IDR. Project # 1.8

Standards USB 2.0 UL-50 standards Created by USB Implementers Forum USB 2.0 Specification released April 27th 2000 Max data transfer speed 60MBps UL-50 standards Standard for enclosures for electrical equipment To ensure the device is safe to handle EVERY project has AT LEAST ONE applicable standard – you must list it. You could spend 30 minutes on this alone – don’t. Just give the overview. Project # 1.8
