I can compare two decimals to the hundredths 4.M.NF.07

Vocabulary Greater Than – Bigger. The symbol > means greater than (it eats the bigger number)

Vocabulary Less Than – Smaller. The symbol < means less than (it points at the smaller number) Hint: the L ess than sign is a slanted L and can be made with your L eft hand

Vocabulary Equal – they are the same value. The symbol = means equal

Example 1 Which is bigger than the shaded part? =

Practice 1 Which is bigger than the shaded part? =

Example 2 Shade in 0.3 on one grid and 0.6 on the other grid. Compare the decimals.

Practice 2 Shade in 0.4 on one grid and 0.7 on the other grid. Compare the decimals.

Example 3 Shade in 0.09 on one grid and 0.9 on the other grid. Compare the decimals.

Practice 3 Shade in 0.6 on one grid and 0.06 on the other grid. Compare the decimals.

Example 4 Write a decimal for each disk. Which decimal is greater? Justify your answer is greater because if I add an invisible zero to the end of it I have 0.40, and 0.40 is greater than 0.36

Practice 4 Write a decimal for each disk. Which decimal is greater? is greater because if I add an invisible zero to the end of it I have 0.60, and 0.60 is greater than 0.53

Example 5 Shade in two decimals that are equivalent on the grids. Justify why the decimals are equal. The decimals are equal because 0.5 is equal to 0.50 and for every tenth I shade in I shade in 10 hundredths. (both are exactly half of a hundred)

Practice 5 Shade in two decimals that are equivalent on the grids. Justify why the decimals are equal.

Closure Turn to your neighbor and tell them which way the greater than and less than signs point. Remind your neighbor about the trick to remember which one faces which way.
