DO NOW! (answers) 1) Renewable- Plants, Trees, Animals, Water. As long as they are not over used or made unusable to humans. Nonrenewable- Oil, Coal, Gold, Natural Gas. Perpetual- water, wind, sunlight 2) Traditional- Burns fossil fuels & produces air pollution. Mining the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth. Impacts: Habitat destruction, air & water pollution, respiratory diseases

Deforestation the removal of trees to clear land for a non- forest use. (e.g. farms, ranches, or urban use) Impacts: Increased erosion (washing away of top soil), loss of habitats & species

Agriculture (farming) the production of plants, animals for food, fiber, and other products used to support human life. Impacts: water pollution from pesticides, fertilizers

Overgrazing when plants are exposed to excessive grazing for long periods of time, or without enough recovery time. (caused by livestock, overpopulation of wild animals, poor agriculture practices) Impacts: Loss of biodiversity (variety of life)

Urbanization the physical growth of urban areas as a result of global change. Impacts: heat islands (reduces soil moisture & intensifies carbon dioxide emissions)

Overfishing To deplete (use up) the supply of usable fish in a certain area of water *Impacts: extinction of marine fish species, loss of biodiversity, decline in fisheries *Aquaculture (potential solution!!): raises fish in ponds or fenced areas of water; however, it requires wild fish for feeding, fish crowding occurs, may invade native habitats
