College Information

NCAA Core Course Requirements  Make sure the core courses you take are NCAA approved (48H)  GPA is taken from your approved core courses, not your accumulative GPA

What year should you start tracking NCAA core course GPA?  Freshmen Year  You could have 33% of NCAA core course requirements in freshmen year.  85% of people questioned said they waited until their junior or senior year.

NCAA Core Course Requirements  16 Core Course Requirements for D1 and D2  Note: they have different Core Course Requirements  Also, online credit recovery courses are viewed very strictly by the NCAA

NCAA Core Course Requirements Division 1 (D1)Division 2 (D2) Course# of Credits English4 Math3 Natural/Phys. Science 2* Additional Eng., Math, Science 1 Social Science2 Additional Core Courses 4 Course# of Credits English4 Math3 Natural/Phys. Science 2* Additional Eng., Math, Science 1 Social Science2 Additional Core Courses 4

Up to Graduation Class 2015  D1 & D2 minimum core course GPA is 2.0  D1 SAT/ACT score* is on a sliding scale  D2 SAT/ACT score* is a fixed minimum 820 SAT/68 ACT  Must complete 16 NCAA core course (48H)  Graduate from high school *does not include the writing portion of SAT/ACT

Class of 2016 & Beyond (D1)  D1 minimum core course GPA increases to 2.3  10 out of 16 core course requirements MUST be completed by the end of junior year.* (7 must come from Eng., Math, Science)  Students may still be able to receive a scholarship with a core course GPA between , but cannot participate freshmen year. *those 10 core courses are locked in 1 st day of senior year

Class of 2018 & Beyond (D2)  Increase minimum core course GPA to 2.2  Introduce sliding scale for SAT/ACT

NCAA Worksheet for Core Course Requirements  Core Course Credits * Grade = Quality Points  Core Course Credit Equal 1,.5, or.33  Numerical Grade Values are: 4=A 3=B 2=C 1=D

NCAA Worksheet for Core Course Requirements (con’t) Core Course GPA Calculations  Add the quality points for each core course  Divide by the total number of core course credits  The result will be your NCAA Core Course GPA

Who is responsible for tracking your core courses?  Guidance Counselor RHS counselors have about 400 students  Coach  Parents and athlete

NCAA & NAIA Eligibility  Now called the Eligibility Center, formally NCAA Clearinghouse. 

Scholarships  No such thing as a 4 year “Full Ride”*  All athletic scholarships are 1-year renewable deals for D2 *D1 schools now have the OPTION to guarantee more than 1 year, but most do not guarantee more than one year.

National Letter of Intent   Voluntary  Provides a 1 year guarantee, if athlete meets academic requirements.  Stops the recruiting process

National Letter of Intent  How can you get out of a national letter of intent?  Not easy, college can deny release and you would have to sit out freshmen year.  You sign NLI with the institution, not the coach.

Social Networking  NEVER facebook, twitter, snap chat, etc. when bitter.  Be smart about what you put on social media.  Cell phone cameras are EVERYWHERE!

What can we do now for college?  Talk to Guidance Counselor about academics  Athletes need to focus on academics  Begin thinking about SAT/ACT tests  Think about colleges and possible majors  Fill out Player Profile for RHS Soccer Website
