Hollywood blockbusters By Navin Wijesiri

Marketing a Hollywood blockbuster Hollywood blockbusters are marketed by using high budget methods such as film poster which are applied everywhere of areas where the film is going to be presented, there are a variety of different poster using shapes and sizes to help present the film, paid advertisements in magazines and newspapers are used as well. Trailers are also a huge part of marketing a film, described as the backbone of promotion, aiming at the target market. Merchandise is another method of marketing as it comes in different forms such as collectables and promotional giveaways, even competitions to earn rare items from the film; this entices the public. Promotional tours can also attract the audience to market the film, promo tours include the cast and director/s to take part in interviews across the media. In addition, the films are marketed by internet marketing which means that paid advertisements on YouTube for instance are shown to help broadcast the film, this is also referred to as media marketing.

Promotion of a Hollywood blockbuster In theatres trailers are used as the backbone of film promotion as they are shown directly to the audience. The film is shown as a teaser to the audience before hitting the big screen in cinema theatres, film posters are used to promote the film and get the audience interested in the film. Standees are used to promote the film; freestanding paperboard life size images and figures from the film it is further improved by creating sounds from the life size creation. The films are also promoted by television adverts and interviews that are shown on television, the internet is used for advertisements online and interactive poster online. Merchandise is used to promote films; such as Aston Martin collectibles for new James Bond film.

Conventions of a blockbuster Conventions in a blockbuster include: A star A large production budget A large marketing budget A large range of merchandising A wide demographic A holiday release date A wide release date

Analysis of a blockbuster This poster is of The Expendables 2, which uses ‘the last supper’ to introduce the characters that are casted in the film. The poster uses many famous actors that are known as film stars, the actors used only suggests a large production budget and a large marketing budget. As this is a large budget film, this includes the large range of merchandise for the audience to buy and promote the film. The demographics include the male audience who are interested in strong action violence film productions, the film was released in the august in which many people are looking forward to the film.

How would I market a blockbuster film? For me to market my blockbuster film I would use paid advertisements in magazines and newspapers to gain the attention of readers to watch the film. I would also use trailers as the attention is easily gained when someone is watching the trailer. The use of merchandise also attracts the audience as they would want to own a memorabilia about the film that they are interested in. The use of promotional tours allows the fans to ask personal questions form the actors about the film, for example; asking whether the actor would have done the some actions as the character is the situation was real.
