Philippines Wanted their independence like Cuba Emilio Aguinaldo led the rebels and felt the U.S. betrayed them True Guerilla style warfare Torture Huge amounts of money poured in for improvements on roads and education Hated Americanization/ wanted freedom Many emigrated to America Finally granted in 1946

China Secretary of State John Hay “Open Door Note” –Urging all countries to announce in their spheres of influence they would respect certain Chinese rights and the ideal of fair competition. Boxer Rebellion 1900 –Didn’t want to be a doormat to Europeans Forced China to pay $333 million to all countries involved. –Americans lowered their share

Panama Hay-Pauncefote Treaty 1901 –Free hand to build –Concede the right to fortify New Panama Canal Co Selling holdings for $40 million –dropped from$109 Had to deal with Columbia –$10 Million and $250,000 lease –Colombia Senate rejects treaty French help create a Panamanian revolt over a Chinese man and a donkey. Bunau Varilla (French Engineer) becomes Panamanian Minister and accepts $10 million offer and widens zone to 10 miles while the French company pockets the $40 million. Why would the Canal be such a big deal????????
