RIGHT SHOULDER PARTNER Often I will ask for you to work with your right shoulder partner, that means if you have a partner to your right you will work with them. For the tables that have groups of three the person closest to the wall with work with the person behind them.

WHAT ARE 5 POTENTIAL SAFETY CONCERNS? Working with your shoulder partner come up with at least 5 safety concerns when using the Canon PowerShot.

REVIEW SAFETY CONCERNS Pages 7, 8, 9 in the manual on my teacher website

ABOUT THE POWERSHOT  Canon  16.0 megapixels  5x or 8x Optical Zoom  Total $165 replacement fee  This includes all pieces

WHAT IS A PIXEL?  What are pixels? The word "pixel" means a picture element. Every photograph, in digital form, is made up of pixels.  They are the smallest unit of information that makes up a picture. Usually round or square, they are typically arranged in a 2-dimensional grid.

WHAT IS A PIXEL USED FOR?  Each pixel stores color information for your image. It will store either 3 or 4 components of color.  3- RGB (Red, Green, Blue),  4- CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, black).

WHAT IS RESOLUTION?  The number of pixels in an image is sometimes called the resolution.  If we are using the term to describe pixel count, one convention is to express resolution as the width by the height, for example a monitor resolution of 1280x1024. This means there are 1280 pixels from one side to the other, and 1024 from top to bottom.

WHY IS RESOLUTION IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT?  Image resolution describes the amount of detail that an image contains. The term can be applied to digital images, film images, and prints. The bottom line is that higher resolution means more image detail.

LOW RESOLUTION LOW NUMBER OF PIXELS HIGH RESOLUTION HIGHER NUMBER OF PIXELS

IF A PHOTO LOOKS GREAT ON THE SCREEN WILL IT ALSO LOOK GREAT IN PRINT?  Not necessarily. The printer requires more pixels to show detail than the monitors in the classroom.

PIXELS PER INCH- PPI  PPI is a measurement of image resolution that defines the size an image will print.  An image that is 1600 by 1200 pixels at 300ppi will print at a size of 5.3 by 4 inches.

WHAT IS A MEGAPIXEL?  One megapixel is one million pixels  How many pixels does the Cannon Powershot have?  16,000,000

WHAT IS A LENS?  At its simplest, a lens is just a curved piece of glass or plastic. Its job is to take the beams of light bouncing off of an object and redirect them so they come together to form a real image -- an image that looks just like the scene in front of the lens.

OPTICAL ZOOM  Optical zoom gets up close by using an actual lens adjustment.

WHAT IS A SHUTTER?  Your camera's shutter controls how long the sensor is exposed to light. It uses a pair of 'curtains' or blinds. One opens to start the exposure, and the other is closed to end it. how-it-all-works/

WHAT IS A SD CARD?  Secure Digital Card  SD card is a small storage medium used to store data such as text, pictures, audio, and video, for use on small, portable or remote computing devices.

USING THE CANON POWERSHOT  Always use the wrist strap!

USING THE CANON POWERSHOT  Always check for:  Battery  Is it there?  Is it charged?  Memory Card

USING THE CANON POWERSHOT

CHECK CONFIGURATIONS  Resolution should be set at “L”  L=16M 4608 x 3456  All other sizes will result in poor image quality.  Using any other image size will require retaking the photo.

SHOOTING MODES  Smart Auto  Live Mode

SMART AUTO  Smart AUTO mode utilizes a system of 32 predefined shooting situations and works to optimize camera settings to accurately render scenes.

LIVE MODE  Allows for adjustments while shooting.  Adjust: Brightness, Color, Tone  Choose from special modes such as: Portrait, Low Lighting, Snow, and Fireworks

SPECIAL EFFECTS  Poster  Fish eye  Miniature Effect  Toy Camera Effect  Monochrome Effect  Using these effects will make your photos silly- projects with effects will not be accepted.

USING THE CANON POWERSHOT  Flash modes  Strengths- lighting up what is close to you  Weaknesses- washes out detail by making image too bright.  In the end, don’t use the flash  Use direct, natural lighting

Flash will fire Flash will not fire

USING THE CANON POWERSHOT  Do not delete photos until you have saved them.  Only delete blurry or poorly composed pictures.  Once your photos are saved AND backed up, it is safe to delete.

DISP. = DISPLAY  ADJUSTS:  BRIGHTNESS  COLOR  TONE

ECO BUTTON= SAVING POWER  CLICK TO ACTIVATE OR DEACTIVATE ECO OPTION

SELF TIMER OPTION  Using a tripod OR a safe, large, level, and sturdy surface you can utilize the self timer option.  Good for:  Obtaining clearer images by avoiding camera shake  If you would like to be included in the picture.

? BUTTON  ON THE CAMERA THERE IS A HELP BUTTON

CHECKOUT PROCEDURE  Return camera checkout form signed and initialed by parent/guardian  Pass camera competency test with a B or better.  Request to checkout a camera  You will be given an empty camera box  Take empty camera box to the library and check it out through the library.  Return to Mrs. Sears to finalize checkout and pick up camera equipment.

KEEP PHOTOS SCHOOL APPROPRIATE  Keep all images appropriate for all audiences.  Also, make sure only school appropriate photos are downloaded to your computer

SAVING & BACKING UP YOUR IMAGES  Backup on GMAIL  SD Card (until you run out of space)  8 gig THUMB/FLASH DRIVE  School flashdrive  School Computer

NOT BACKING UP ON MULTIPLE SOURCES:  Could result in you having to redo assignments 

HOMEWORK  STUDY!

LEARN ABOUT YOUR PHONE/ CAMERA/HOW WILL YOU SAVE?  How many megapixels is it?  Research and explain how you can use it better to make stronger images.  How will you get your images onto the school computer?  Starting tomorrow, how will you save your images from the school computer?

THINGS TO STUDY FOR THE TEST  Camera Equipment Checkout Items and timelines for checkout  Label entire camera with functions  Safety Concerns  Camera Specs: Name, Type, Megapixels, Zoom  Pixel  Resolution  Resolution Configuration for device  PPI  Megapixel  Lens  Optical Zoom  Shutter  SD Card  Shooting Modes  Special Effects  Flash Mode  Deleting Photos  DISP. Function  Eco Function  Help Button  Self Timer  School Appropriate Photos  Saving & Backing Up Images
