Energy Power-point

Energy The ability of a system to perform work. It can be transferred and converted, but not created or destroyed.

Types of Energy A) Potential: Stored energy B) Kinetic: Energy of movement. How much kinetic energy a body has depends on its speed and mass.

Energy Forms (MR. CHEN) Energy TypesKineticPotentialDefinitionExample

Gravitational Potential Energy The energy a body has because it is near something with mass. The amount of energy is related to an objects height. Gravitational Energy = Weight X Height

Mechanical Energy (Kinetic) The energy due to motion.

Elastic Potential Energy Energy stored when something is stretched or compressed. This is present in a pulled rubber band, or a squashed spring.

Chemical Energy (Potential) Energy a body has because of what it is made. The energy is stored in the chemical bonds of molecules. This is present in an electrical cell, explosives, food and oil. Examples: Respiration: C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O > 6H 2 O + 6CO 2 (Happens in Mitochondria) Photosynthesis: 6H 2 O + 6CO > C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Nuclear Energy (Potential): Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms that can be released during fission, fusion or radioactive decay.

Heat or Thermal Energy (Kinetic) Energy from the movement of atoms. Energy is transferred from hot regions, to cool regions because of the temperature difference between them.

Electrical Energy (Kinetic) This is really just the kinetic energy of moving charges (electrons) in an electrical circuit.electrical circuit

Electromagnetic Radiation (Kinetic) Energy is carried by electromagnetic radiation, such as light or gamma rays.electromagnetic radiation

Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
