Focusing Questions  What are nonprinting characters in a Word document?  How do I recognize them?  How do I hide or show them?  When might it be useful to show these characters?  When would you want to hide them?  Why would you want to use them?

What are nonprinting characters? Name of characterWhat it Looks Like

What are nonprinting characters? Name of character Tab → Space  Nonbreaking space ° Paragraph ¶ Line break 

What are nonprinting characters? Appear on the screen but not on the printed document Combine and split paragraphs Space paragraphs USES

What are nonprinting characters? Space  included as part of words, sentences and numbers.

What are nonprinting characters? A word includes the space character that follows it. A sentence includes the end-of- sentence punctuation and at least one space.

What are nonprinting characters? Nonbreaking space ° prevent 2 words from being divided between 2 lines eg. keep “ Mr ” and “ Smith ” on the same line. Can you think of any other examples where this feature is useful?

What are nonprinting characters? Paragraph ¶ a paragraph is any amount of text followed by a ¶ mark.

What are nonprinting characters? Line break  starts a new line within the same paragraph create a paragraph of short lines such as an address

Guided Practice Now you will take turns practicing these functions to be sure you understand how they work

Work Time

Getting Started Okay iSquaders, you are ready to work on your own. During the next 30 minutes you will edit and format the document titled “Format Word” which I will give to you. Follow the directions as given. We will share at the end of the work time. If you finish early, open one of your own documents and edit it using the techniques learned today.

Work Time Steps: Save “Format Word” document to students’ computer. Students open document. Turn on Hide/Show function by clicking on ¶ icon. Place insertion point in front of word “Introduction”. Enter once to create new paragraph. Make one paragraph into two by doing the following: (a) place insertion point in front of the word “Duke” that follows the word “Albuquerque”. (b) press Enter once to create a separate paragraph and once again to create a space between papagraphs. Using the line break function (Shift + Enter), create one new paragraph by typing in the following address and phone number: Duke City Gateway, 15 Montgomery Boulevard, Albuquerque, NM ( ). Add a new word by following these steps: (a) Move the insertion point to the immediate left of the word “location” (b) Delete it and type “area” (c) Add a non breaking space by following these steps: Place insertion point in front of the word “tours”, backspace to remove space character and then press {Ctrl+shift+spacebar}. Save document.
