Day 1

Describe how the United States helped the Allies win the war

When the first troops arrived, the war had already killed millions of people A revolt had started in Russia (one of the Allies) Great Britain and France were in danger We see that America had a huge role in winning the war

Russian troops were very important in the war Russians fought the Germans Russia was ruled by a tsar; a powerful ruler. The tsar and his family were wealthy, most of Russia was poor.\ This caused many unhappy people; a revolution occurred. The government was overthrown and became a communist government.

The new government took control of everything in Russia. Many people died during the revolution, including the tsar and his family (they were murdered). They signed a peace treaty with Germany and the Central Powers Russia’s troops were done fighting the war The Allies now needed more troops Everyone was waiting on the U.S.

To get to Europe, troops had to sail across the Atlantic Ocean This was dangerous due to the German U-Boats, so the navy moved in convoys. Warships traveled alongside the troops. June 1917, troops arrive in France In two months, over 1 million soldiers came to France to fight. The Germans planned to attack Paris, they broke through the Allied lines but they were stopped by the U.S. and the French. Paris was saved.

A thick forest in France, that the Germans controlled For 2 weeks, 24 hours a day, the U.S. fought their way through. Germans hid machines guns in the trees and the Americans were fired upon. After losing 8,000 men, the Americans took control of the forest.

Germans controlled the Argonne Forest; fortified with guns, barbed wire and big cannons September 26, 1918 more than one million Americans attacked at dawn They kept fighting for 47 days, until the Americans pushed through. Big defeat for Germany Americans lost more than 100,000 men.

Germany began to fall back, became worried about winning the war. On November 11 th at the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month, Germany and the Central Powers agreed to stop fighting. During this armistice, they signed an agreement to end the war. What happens next?????????????
