English Language Development in P.E.: Increasing Students’ Opportunities to Learn Prepared by Sheila Burke, Joana Feit & Bissa Zamboldi-Moore

Language Learners in PE How does it feel when you don’t speak the language of instruction? What does it take for you to be able to participate in the class activities? What steps help you to participate and learn the language of instruction?

Practice integrating language & content goals to write sentence frames Step 1: Find a partner. Step 2: Listen to the overview of planning – any questions? Step 3: Work with your partner to complete “You Try It” #s 1-4. Step 4: Use “Signal Words and Language Functions Chart” to help you. Step 5: Ask Sheila, Bissa or Joana for help if you need it. Step 6: Share an idea with your colleagues.

Good times during class to integrate language instruction/practice “Exit Ticket” Partner check Homework assignment Saying the name of movement while moving, “ I am rolling.” Saying body parts while stretching – choral recitation Repeating a phrase after teacher

Plan for your lessons tomorrow Identify the content goals Review the language functions charts to pick a communication target Write sentence frames to teach students the target phrases Identify vocabulary to be posted Make a good lesson plan and a couple of posters for classroom use!

Thank you for your participation! Evaluate the workshop Contact Sheila, Joana or Bissa if you have questions once you begin implementation.
