Daily 5/CAFE

 Connections is a way for people to connect  It is a way for people to reflect within the context of a group with a thought, a story, an insight, a questions, or a feeling Rules  Speak if you want to.  Don’t speak if you don’t want to.  Speak only once until everyone who wants to has a chance to speak.  Listen, but do not respond.

Content & Language Objectives Content Content Objective Participants will identify, recognize and review Daily 5 and CAFE components and Reflect on their own literacy instruction. Language Objectives Participants will be able to discuss the shift in thinking about Literacy Instruction, debrief Daily 5CAFE and write a plan for mini lessons in their classroom.

 Working well/ Not working so well  Strategy Groups verse conferring  Good Fit books  CCSS linked to Café menu  Create Mini lessons

 What is working well?  What is not working so well?

 No longer do all 5 Daily 5s  Daily 5 with young learners typically 3 rounds  Daily 5 with older learners typically 2 rounds

 What are the differences between conferring and Strategy group?

One- on-One

Questions to ask yourself about each student: 1. What is his/her reading level, according to DRA or Running Record? 2. What strategies does he/she need to deepen his/her knowledge of reading? 3. How can I group this student with other students with similar needs? 4. How can I develop goals for my strategy groups? Goal: Plan one week of lesson plans for one strategy group.

Students are more motivated and independent:  When they have more book choices  When teachers give them opportunities  When teachers give them choices of what they read

I PICK “Good Fit Books” 1. I look at a book 2. Purpose 3. Interest 4. Comprehend 5. Know all the words

 Sister teach “Good Fit” Books everyday, then every week the rest of the year.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfecFjBHf c8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfecFjBHf c8  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAN6Vgi 5c9k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAN6Vgi 5c9k

Now we no longer dictate everyone must read the same Book. We still level books for teachers so we can provide students with Good Fit books. Chapter book whole class sets dived up because we no longer all read the same book. Organizing A Classroom Library

Content Objectives Participants will…  Analyze the alignment of CAFÉ strategies with the Common Core State Standards.  Review the steps taken to prepare mini-lessons.  Identify and apply ELA Common Core State Standards to the creation of mini-lessons. Language Objectives Participants will…  Discuss strategies for creating effective strategy based mini-lessons.  Discuss, listen to, read and write mini-lessons based on Common Core State Standards and student needs.

 As you read the article, CAFÉ Meets Common Core, underline the most important idea.  Be prepared to share out.

The most important idea in this article was…

 Length – What is the length of a mini-lesson?  Modeling - How will this look?  Guided Practice - What is this and why is this important?  Continuity of lessons - How do you plan for this?  80-20 Rule: What is this?

 Take a minute to reflect on your teaching or lesson plans. Do the length of your whole-class and small-group lessons match the age of your students?  What ideas for brain and body breaks might you integrate into your classroom routines to shorten your lessons?

The Structure Why 7-10 minutes? Brain Research shows the # of their age is the # of minutes a child can sustain higher level thinking. This means 7-10 minutes of direct instruction

Daily 5  5-10 minutes with strategy group  Check stamina before you confer  Last focus lesson  sharing *review all the mini-lessons *have students share

Café Menu-(Behaviors That Support Reading) Reading Conference Form Writing Conference Form Keeping Track Form Conferencing Form Café Menu Conferring Notebook

System for Assessing Understanding and Synthesizing Data Transferring Data for Instruction into Conferring Notebook or App
