 Cocaine is one the strongest and most dangerous stimulants drugs. (Upper)  Derived from the leaves of the coca plant  Highly addictive and affects the brain directly  Comes in either a white powder or a clear crystal. WHAT IS COCAINE

 Cocaine has been around since the Incas.  They would chew the leaves of coca plants to get their hearts racing and quicken their breathing.  Countered the effects of living in the thin mountain air of the Andes.  Native Peruvians also chewed Coca leaves during religious ceremonies. SHORT HISTORY

 Before there was a lot of research done on cocaine many doctors and psychologist prescribed it to patients.  Sigmund Freud was a very well established psychoanalyst  Came up with the very popular Psychosexual theory  Was a big supporter of cocaine  Prescribed cocaine to patients that he saw  He even prescribed it to his wife SIGMUND FREUD

 3 main way to take Cocaine 1)Snorting: inhaling it through the nose. 2) Injecting: used with a needle to inject directly into the blood stream 3) Digesting Orally: Swallowed through the mouth and then absorbed into the blood. Can also be rubbed on the gums. USING COCAINE

 Orally: 1.2 Grams  Injecting: 750 to 800 mg  Snorting: 0.1 to 0.2 Grams  The amount changes for people who have built a tolerance to Cocaine AMOUNT NEEDED

 Crack Cocaine is a Crystal form of Cocaine  Is also known as freebase  The user heats and then smokes the crystals  Called “crack” because of the crackling sound it makes when heated.  Crack reaches the brain quicker than any other way but the high is shorter  Is a lot cheaper than pure powdered cocaine. WHAT IS CRACK?

 Cocaine reaches the brain very quickly no matter which method you use to take it  Cocaine blocks the reuptake in the synapse of the neurotransmitters dopamine, nor-epinephrine, and serotonin.  These transmitters are unable be reabsorbed and recycled  The state of euphoria is from the release of all the dopamine HOW IS AFFECTS THE BRAIN

 Gain a tolerance ‘  Sorting can lead to a lose of smell  Risk of heart attacks and strokes  Decrease in appetite (to happy to eat)  Injecting can lead to allergic reaction  Can contract AIDS and HIV  Ingesting can lead to bowl gangrene CHRONIC EFFECTS OF COCAINE

 Cocaine can lead to risky sexual behavior and increase the chance of an unwanted pregnancy.  The pregnant women can experience extremely high blood pressure and heart rate  It can get so high that it can cause heart failure and bleeding on the brain  Can cause hemorrhaging on the placenta and cause death for both mother and baby.  38% of women using cocaine while pregnant lose their babies PREGNANT MOTHERS ON COCAINE

 Babies that do make it to the world are either addicted to cocaine and suffer from withdrawals or have serious side effects.  These effects can include: premature birth, low birth weight, stunted growth, and damage to the brain and nervous system. COCAINE BABIES

 Cocaine is mainly exported out of South America  It is mainly grown in Peru  The most popular places it is exported to is the United States and the European countries  An estimated 800 tons is exported every year COCAINE AROUND THE WORLD

 In the United States, 35.3 million Americans aged 12 and older reported to have used cocaine  The highest rates of cocaine use in the U.S. are among adults aged 18 to 25  Among high school students alone, 8.5% of twelfth graders had used cocaine during their life  More than 400,000 babies are born addicted to cocaine each year in the U.S COCAINE IN THE UNITED STATES
