Day Three – Race to the Top Career and Technical Education Fall 2011

Preparation for RttT Day Three Login to C-MAPP and download the following documents to a flash drive or some type of media to use during RttT Day Three: NC CTE Essential Standards 2012 Career Cluster Document Essential Standards Definitions Graduation Plan (Middle School teachers only) Review documents prior to Day Three staff development. Meet in content-like groups for Day Three staff development

Desired Outcomes Understand scope and sequence of course offerings within your content area, grades 6-12 Understand changes in CTE Essential Standards for your content area Understand how to use the NC Career Clusters document for course planning at your school Recommend career clusters showing which courses need to be offered at your school

Reading the Career Cluster Chart Career Pathway within the Cluster Career Cluster Related MS Courses A concentrator has earned four or more technical credits in a Career Cluster, at least one of which is a completer (*). The student may earn all four from the foundation courses or three from a foundation and one from enhancement courses. Courses are arranged horizontally by recommended sequence. Refer to course descriptions to determine prerequisite and if Cooperative Education is permitted. Key: * = Completer Course, ^ = Partnering Opportunity

Action Steps – High School 1. Using the NC Career Clusters document located in C-MAPP for your content area, identify the clusters that you currently offer at your school. 2. Determine which career clusters allow students to earn CTE Concentrator status (see definitions) in your content area. 3. Examine career clusters within your content area in order to identify courses that could be offered for students to achieve CTE Concentrator status.

Action Steps – High School Cont’d 4. Recommend CTE courses* that need to be offered at your school so that students have an opportunity to earn CTE Concentrator status. Recommendations must take into consideration existing facilities, staff, space and equipment. * Submit this information to your Department Chairperson electronically so that all recommendations can be consolidated to be submitted to and your

Identify the career clusters in your content area and courses that are available to students in grades 9 – Create a graduation plan (USE ONLY CTE COURSES) for a student who will achieve CTE Concentrator status using the NC Career Cluster document for your content area and Graduation Plan in C-Mapp.

Examine the “Draft CTE Scope and Sequence Middle School” document for Provide comments regarding the implementation of the proposed middle school CTE scope and sequence. * Submit recommendations and comments to your Department Chairperson electronically so that information can be consolidated into one document for your school.
