WELCOME Next Generation Councils

Jan Stone, Director of Data, Assessment and Research Bullitt County Schools Amy Ramage, District Assessment Coordinator Madison County Schools Presenters: Facilitator: Liz Erwin, Training Director Kentucky Association of School Councils

Guiding Question How can I assist the council in building effective partnerships among the community, district leadership and members of the Board of Education as we work to implement SB1?

SBDM Requirement – KRS Assessment and Accountability – Required annual disaggregated data review – Adopt plan by April 1 – Submit plan to Superintendent and Board of Education for review

State Assessment and Accountability Areas of Focus (as related to Councils) State Assessment and Accountability Formative Assessment Program Reviews Writing Standards

Formative Assessment KRS (law that outlines state testing system) – Requires annual student assessments and state and local program reviews – Commercial OR locally-developed interim or formative assessments may be used for monitoring student growth toward mastery of standards

Program Reviews KRS (law outlining state testing) – Annual state and local program reviews and audits to be conducted with feedback provided to each school relating to the selected programs. – Recommendations for improving program components must also be included.

Program Reviews KRS (law outlining state testing Council must adopt a policy to be implemented by the principal in the following areas: – Developing procedures consistent with local board policy – Determining alignment to state standards – Technology utilization – Program appraisal

Gauging Where We Are Using the Council Responsibilities Checklist, take 5 minutes and self assess where your school currently is on the five areas listed. Divide into groups and share your findings. Each group will share something that stood out during the conversation within the group.

Putting Responsibilities Into Action Fulfilling our responsibilities under SB1 are much easier if we develop strong partnerships with other stakeholder groups. In this next section, we will look at ideas and strategies for developing more effective partnerships with the community, district leadership, and the board of education.

Small Group Activity “Deal” the deck of cards containing ideas for building partnerships. Take turns reading the strategies and ideas found on the deck of cards. Categorize the cards into three sections on your mat – To Be Done Now – May Be Done in the Future – Ideas that Do Not Fit the School Vision Use the blank cards for great ideas that surface in your group Ensure each stakeholder group is represented

Ah-ha's What were the ideas that you found you might implement?

Setting the Actions in Policy SBDM Councils have specific responsibilities to be set into policy. We have pulled two specific areas from the Program Review documents and identified how those could be addressed in your council policy.

Formative Assessment Could be included in council policies relating to instructional practices and assessment

Program Reviews Sample Demonstrators from Program Review documents – Practical Living and Career Studies – Arts and Humanities

Next Generation Councils To get there, we must build effective partnerships among the community, district leadership and members of the Board of Education as we work to implement SB1.
