Evaluation in the NCCP An overview for Curling

How do we determine competency for a job that is as much an art as it is a science?

Core Competencies Problem Solving Valuing Leadership Critical Thinking Interaction How to evaluate? What does a coach need to do? Coaching Outcomes 1.Make Ethical Decisions 2.Provide Support to Athletes in Training 3.Analyze Performance 4.Plan a Practice Coaching Criteria What is evaluated within each outcome? Evidences What does the evaluator see to verify the criteria

Coach Education in NCCP Assumptions Certification is not about recognizing the perfect coach but rather acknowledging, through evaluation, that a coach meets NCCP + CCA minimum certification standards Appropriate training is needed to help coaches achieve these certification standards (Curriculum Design)

Certification must be… 1.Administratively feasible 2.Professionally acceptable 3.Credible 4.Legally defensible 5.Affordable 6.Reasonably accessible

Components of Evaluation 1.Portfolio 2.Formal Observation 3.Debrief & Action Plan

Portfolio Comp-Int  A practice plan for a Competition Introduction athletes  EAP for the candidate’s training site

Formal Observation Only a slice of the overall certification process Gather evidence to assist in making a judgment on the attainment of a standard Support Athletes in Training, Analyzing Performance

Debrief & Action Plan Provides an opportunity continue to gather information or to clarify specific evidences that may not have been observed. Provides feedback to the candidate about what went well, what areas need improvement Identifies specific actions that the candidate can DO to continue to improve

What is the process for becoming certified in the NCCP?

Certified Instructor = Debrief and Action + Build Portfolio + Formal Observation Competition Introduction Evaluation Process
