Thursday, February 3 rd, 2011 Geography: IN: What country is the farthest south in the Western Hemisphere? Predict it’s climate. Content Objective: Students will locate physical and human features and evaluate their implications for society by describing the various regions of Chile and determining how humans interact with them in a persuasive letter to a friend.

Point to the classroom wall I’d have to go through to get to Chile.

Key Words: Region- A group of places with at least 1 common characteristic.  Places can be joined by:  Physical features such as mountains, oceans…  Human features such as languages, religion…  Often country, state, or city borders are drawn along the same lines as regions. Example: Most of FLORIDA’s borders are defined by ocean

Region Continued… Sometimes regions extend beyond country, state, or city borders. Example: The Rocky Mountain region of the USA consists of at least 7 states. Or the Big 10 Athletic Conference

How many regions does Chile have?

Chile- Profile Population: 17,094,270 Capital: Santiago- Huge city (6 Million people) Think-Pair-Share- What % of Chile population lives in Santiago?

Human Characteristics Language= Spanish Religion= Roman Catholic (divorce illegal) History= Many years under military dictatorship- Agusto Pinochet  Many were killed, but country= peaceful & democratic now.

Physical Characteristics- North Very dry- desert, mountains, coast  Atacama Desert= driest in world. -Never recorded rain.
