COMPONENT 2B: ESTABLISHING A CULTURE FOR LEARNING Domain 2: The Classroom Environment

Outcome Become aware of the factors that encourage a positive culture for learning Elements: 1 Importance of the content 2 Expectations for learning and achievement 3 Student pride in work

Warm-Up In classrooms with robust cultures for learning, all students receive the message that although the work is challenging, they are capable of achieving it if they are prepared to work hard. A manifestation of teachers’ expectations for high student achievement is their insistence on the use of precise language by students. Charlotte Danielson

Make a list of ways you currently establish a culture for learning in your own classroom. Think about your role and students’ roles. i.e. high expectations of all students, display of student work, etc.

Activity The Framework for Teacher Evaluation Guide- pgs Read and discuss key points.

Activity Create a poster or visual of a classroom that depicts the components of Establishing a Culture for Learning Be sure to address: 1 Importance of the Content 2 Expectations for Learning and Achievement 3 Student pride in work Consult pages in the Teacher Evaluation Instrument.

Gallery Walk Take 3 minutes to do a gallery walk of the posters/visuals. Share a take-away from this session or idea you want to implement in your classroom.
