F.A.Q.

HOW ARE THE WORKSHOPS CHOSEN? The workshop topics are designed to give student exposure to eight competency areas. These have been based on the works of the following areas: -Learning Reconsidered 2 -The Council of the Advancement of Standards: Leadership Competencies - The Social Change Model of Leadership Development

WHAT IS THE SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL? The model has two primary goals: -To enhance students’ understanding of one’s self as a leader and leadership competence -To facilitate positive social change in the community Collaboration Common purpose Controversy with civility Citizenship Consciousness of self CongruenceCommitment Group Values Individual Values Society/Community Values Values CHANGE excerpted from the Social Change of Leadership Development Guidebook Version III

CAN I CHOOSE MY OWN LEADERSHIP COACH? YES! If you have a relationship with a professional on campus whom you would like to serve as your leadership coach, you may ask them. The criteria is that they agree to meet with you at least twice, and use the materials provided by REAL to connect your learning to your involvement. You may ask the REAL Coordinator more about this option.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO ATTEND? NO! This program is a student fee funded program, with very minimal costs due to the generosity and time of many faculty and staff across our campus.

WHAT ARE THE TIME REQUIREMENTS? ~15 hours to receive the Leadership Preparation Certification -Workshops are 60 minutes x 10 -Two Leadership Coach Meetings -Orientation and Completion Quiz

OR

WHAT ARE THE TIME REQUIREMENTS? Drop into any workshops you like! Try it out depending on the topic and your interest!

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE REAL EXPERIENCE? Students!* *LSC student staff: Make sure to check with your supervisor regarding compensation!

HOW DO WE KNOW HOW FAR ALONG WE ARE IN THE COMPLETION PROCESS OF OUR LEADERSHIP PREPARATION CERTIFICATION? We require participants to sign in at each workshop they attend so we can record attendance. Our REAL Experience staff in the office monitors all records making sure you are fulfilling requirements. You will have access to your recorded progress through a Google Doc form.

I’M A SENIOR GRADUATING IN MAY, CAN I FULFILL A CERTIFICATE IN TIME? Definitely! There are multiple opportunities each semester to complete each required workshop. The completion of the Leadership Preparation Certification just depends on how much time you want to put in.

WHAT IF I’M NOT INVOLVED ON CAMPUS, CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE? Of course! This could be your first step in connecting with a staff member or other participants in which your interest has been peaked to get involved somewhere else in the community.
