3. Purpose The REAL Experience … is tailored to meet the interests, needs, and goals of each participant. This experience is comprised of various workshops within different interest areas that, upon completion individually and collectively, result in a certificate. provides all interested CSU students with an accessible opportunity to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes an understanding of self, groups, and their community. offers various opportunities for students to reflect upon and develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to ethical leadership development and practices.

Overview of the Certificates Personal Foundation of Leadership Co-Curricular Certificate (Foundations) Focuses on personal growth by addressing ethics and personal values, and serves as an introduction to leadership. Organizational Leadership Co-Curricular Certificate (OL) Guides individuals in learning how to effectively apply their leadership proficiencies towards organizational, group, and team development. Social Justice Leadership Co-Curricular Certificate (SJ) Enables participants to critically examine various issues and ‘isms’ that relate to living in a multicultural and diverse community, giving them the skills to act on the issues and causes they are most passionate about. Community Engagement Leadership Co-Curricular Certificate (CE) ***available Winter 2015 Facilitates individuals’ understanding of what it means to take an active role within their communities, enabling participants to address issues that they observe are affecting our society. Outdoor Adventure & Environmental Justice Co-Curricular Certificate (OAEJ)***available Winter 2015 Focuses on developing participants’ understanding in the areas of environmental education, environmental leadership, group processing, and team dynamics.

6. Personal Foundation of Leadership Co- Curricular Certificate (Foundations) This area allows for foundational leadership development for each individual. The Foundation of Leadership Co- Curricular Certificate focuses on understanding basic leadership definitions, ideas, and theories. This co-curricular certificate focuses on personal growth by addressing ethics and personal values, and serves as an introduction to leadership. Organizational Leadership Co- Curricular Certificate (OL) The Organizational Leadership Co-Curricular Certificate will guide individuals in learning how to effectively apply their leadership philosophies, skills and proficiencies towards organizational, group, and team development. Through this co-curricular certificate, participants will learn how their individual role impacts the organization. 12. Capstone Co-Curricular Certificate: A REAL CSU Student Leader The REAL CSU Student Leader Co-Curricular Certificate recognizes those student leaders at CSU who have demonstrated excellence as leaders and a commitment to themselves and our community as a whole. Students who complete this co-curricular certificate have a clear understanding of who they are and how they may impact our community, and they have taken an active role in engaging our community through volunteer hours, leadership roles, and retreat participation.

13. Capstone Co-Curricular Certificate: A REAL CSU Student Leader Requirements : 1.Complete three (3) Co-Curricular Certificates 2.Participate in one of the following leadership experiences offered by CSU: Campus Step-Up (Spring), LeaderShape (Spring), Orientation Leader Class (Spring), Resident Assistant Class (Spring) or another approved opportunity. 3.Fulfill at least 50 hours of active involvement in the process of leadership. Please note that any involvements must be approved beforehand. 4.Meet with a career counselor after completing three (3) Co-Curricular Certificates to discuss the applications of the leadership certificates 5.Complete one of the following capstone options: a.Create a leadership portfolio b.Develop a mentor/mentee experience for a semester

14. If you finished the minimum of all requirements to complete the Capstone Co-Curricular Certificate, it would look like this: Workshops: 8 – Workshops for Certificate 1 8 – Workshops for certificate 2 8 – Workshops for certificate 3 24 – Workshops in Total Volunteer Hours: 8 – Certificate 1 Volunteer Hours 8 – Certificate 2 Volunteer Hours 8 – Certificate 3 Volunteer Hours 24 – Volunteer Hours in Total + Other Requirements: Participate in a CSU Leadership Retreat Meet with a Career Counselor to discuss benefits of experience 50 hours in a Leadership Role Gain a utility piece (i.e. mentor/mentee) + = A REAL CSU Student Leader Reflections: 1 – Certificate 1 Reflection 1 – Certificate 2 Reflection 1 – Certificate 3 Reflection +

15. At Completion 1.After each interest area completion, participants will receive a certificate 2.At the end of the year, there will be a reception recognizing those who have completed a certificate 3.When a participant completes the Capstone Co-Curricular Certificate, they will receive Graduation Medal, which a student can choose to wear to their CSU Graduation

16. Does it cost anything to attend? No. This program is a student fee funded program, with very minimal costs due to the generosity and time of many faculty and staff across our campus.

17. What are the time requirements? The real question is how much time would you like to put into your experience. On average, workshops are 60 minutes, some are longer and service hours are required for every certificate. For example, at the very minimum, one certificate will take a total of 16 hours; 8 hours for the 60 minute workshop choices and 8 hours of community service.

18. I read in the Capstone Certificate that there is a leadership experience requirement. Can I count something that I went to last year? Sometimes. In most cases, if you went through a previous leadership experience that has taken place at CSU, come to the SLiCE office and ask us. There are some you can count because we have them on record already and we recognize that CSU has a lot of great opportunities. Also, there might be some that you may not be able to count.

19. Can I do more than one interest certificate? Yes. You may complete as many of the certificates as you would like. If your goal is to complete the Capstone Certificate, you must complete at least 3 of the interest certificates.

20. How do we know when we've completed a certificate? Do you keep track of our activity? We require participants to sign in at each workshop they attend so we can record attendance. We also require participants to complete the Certificate Completion Form.

21. Does the community service I perform have to be through the REAL Experience? No. Community service can be performed individually or with a group. It can also be something you are already doing on your own. When you are ready to notify of us of what your community service project (or projects) was, we will have a form in the SLiCE office for you to complete.

22. I'm a senior graduating in May, can I fulfill a certificate in time? Yes. The completion of a certificate just depends on how much time you want to put in.

23. What if I'm not involved on campus, can I still participate? Yes. This could be your first step in connecting with a staff member or other participants in which your interest has been peaked to get involved somewhere else in the community.

24. How do I apply? There is no application process, just drop by a workshop today.

25. Almost Done! Your final step before completing this orientation is filling out an online form on RamLink. 1.Click on the link below which should automatically open your email application (If not, please input SLiCE_REAL@mail.colostate.edu into the address line.
