Page 5 CHAPTER 1

 Native American Regions  Big explorers WHAT WILL BE ON YOUR QUIZ

 The Vikings were actually the first to visit North America.  Leif Ericson (Son of Eric the Red) found a new land in the west and called it Vinland.  Though the Vikings regularly traveled to the Americas, the rest of Europe was unaware.  It was not until Columbus discovered the Americas that Europe became interested in this new land. THE OLD WORLD FINDS THE NEW

THE THREE Gs  God  Gold  Glory REASONS TO EXPLORE

 We all know now that Columbus thought he was sailing to the Indies (What is Asia today).  He took three ships - Nina - Pinta - Santa Maria  He called the people of North America “Indians” thinking he had landed in India. COLUMBUS

 Spain will gain a lot of control of the new world because of their early involvement with Columbus.  This means a lot of explorers will be Spanish.  The Spanish did not call their explorers explorers but Conquistadors (Spanish for conquerors.)  Conquistadors were not very nice. They stole, claimed, and killed many people. THE OLD WORLD CLAIMS THE NEW

 Juan Ponce de Leon – Fountain of Youth in Florida  Hernando de Soto – Founded the first permanent settlement in U.S. St. Augustine. You can still visit this city in Florida today.  Francisco Vasquez de Coronado – traveled and united Spanish claims from Mexico to Kansas. REVIEW OF EXPLORES

 The English (England, British) felt left out.  Spain was making LOTS of money in gold but England wasn’t.  The English felt that if they don’t start exploring the New World soon they would miss out!  They sent John Cabot – Claimed North America for the English. ENGLISH RIVALRY

 He was a Sea Dog (Like an English hired Pirate)  Queen Elizabeth I supported the Sea Dogs.  They would steal (plunder) from Spanish ships and sea ports.  This caused strife (or bad feelings) between England and Spain. SIR FRANCIS DRAKE

 Since the Sea Dogs were supported by Queen Elizabeth I they had a lot of power.  Spain (lead by Philip II) became tired of Drake and the Sea Dogs.  Drake attacks a Spanish port in the Americas. The Spanish retaliate by sending 130 ships into the English Channel.  Drake used fire ships to break up the Spanish formation in doing show a wind picked up (This wind was later called the “protestant wind.”). The Spanish ships were scattered. SPANISH ARMADA

 Why do you think that the Spanish Armada’s defeat is so important?

 ROANOKE ISLAND - A LOST COLONY

 The French are a little late to the game and will miss out on a lot of the land.  They wanted to find a northwest passage through the Americas in order to get to the Far East.  Jacques Cartier claimed and named what is now Canada.  Robert de La Salle claimed the Mississippi River and all the land that it drained into. Not knowing that it would give them land all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico.  Samuel de Champlain explores St. Lawrence river and established what is now Quebec. THE FRENCH

 Because the French colonies will not be easily to live in nor provide a way for quick riches they will not get too many settlers coming over to the new world.  Also the French only wanted Catholic settlers leaving out the French protestant group called Huguenots.  This is why the French will struggle in the New World. FRANCE CONTINUED

 America’s first permanent English colony (1607)  Sponsored by Virginia Company of London  Upper class – not use to physical labor  “No work, no food” – John Smith  Grew tobacco (very addicting) – John Rolfe JAMESTOWN READING AND QUESTIONS

 Read and add!  Page 13 ARRIVAL OF AFRICANS

 1619 the Virginia Company (the joint-stock company that funded Jamestown) allowed the colonists the freedom to start the House of Burgesses.  It was the first representative assembly.  The colonists (Men who owned land) cam together to pass laws for the good of the people.  In this way Jamestown played a role in the beginning of the American republic.
