Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy  What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?  A piece of wood is lit on fire. What type of energy does it start with, and what type of energy does it become?  Steam makes a turbine spin. What type of energy does it start with, and what type of energy does it become?

Agenda  Unit 3 Mastery  Catalyst Review  Two types of resources  Oil!  ActivExpression Practice  Exit Question

Objectives By the end of today, all SWBAT…  Describe the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources  Describe how fossil fuels are formed  Describe how we get energy from fossil fuels

We use many of the Earth’s resources to generate energy

 Key Point #1: All resources are one of two types  Renewable  Non-renewable Two types of resources

 Non-renewable resources: rate of consumption is greater than regeneration rate  Will someday run out  Examples: coal, natural gas, oil  Renewable resources: regeneration rate is greater than rate of consumption  Will not run out (at least until the Sun dies)  Ex: Wind, solar, water, geothermal energy

Renewable or non-renewable? Non-Renewable!!!

Renewable or non-renewable? Renewable!!!

Renewable or non-renewable? Renewable!!!

Renewable or non-renewable??? Non-Renewable!!!

Renewable or non-renewable? Renewable!!!

Renewable or non-renewable??? Non-Renewable!!!

Fossil Fuels  Key Point #2: Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years  Fossil fuels = energy source formed from the fossils of dead organisms Examples: Oil, coal, and natural gas  How? Dead organisms settle to the bottom of oceans/lakes Buried under many layers of earth Enormous pressure and heat changes them into fossil fuels

Rate of consumption  Fossil fuels take millions of years to form  The United States consumes 20 million barrels of oil, 62.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas, and 2.5 million tons of coal each day What does this mean…?

Uh-oh Fossil fuels make up 85% of all United States energy sources!

Clicker questions..

 Key Point #1: All resources are either renewable or non-renewable  Non-renewable resources: rate of consumption is greater than regeneration rate  Renewable resources: regeneration rate is greater than rate of consumption  Key Point #2: Fossil fuels are formed over millions of years  Non-renewable  Make up 85% of our total energy

Exit Questions  Some scientists estimate that current oil reserves are sufficient to create 800 billion barrels of oil. Total world consumption of oil is 76 million barrels per day, which means that there is enough oil left for about 27 years (at present rate of consumption).  Based on the above description, what type of resource is oil? Why?  Describe in detail how fossils become oil.  Identify two renewable resource, and explain why EACH of them is renewable.
