Objectives To write a story that incorporates a specific object, a specific location and written for a specific genre.

You have already… Written flashbacks. Written interesting openings. Written to the structure of exposition, complication, crisis and resolution. Completed a shared writing task. Now it’s time to do it on your own.

What is genre?

Different genres include: Romance- Comedy Horror- Spy thriller Action- Fantasy Crime Thriller- Science Fiction Police Drama- Teen Fiction Sports

Task You must pick 1 object from the bag. One piece of paper that tells you the setting for your story. One piece of paper that tells you the genre you should be writing in.

Example Can of baked beans = Object Swimming Pool = Location Thriller = Genre

Tom had been placed in a chair right on the edge of the swimming pool. Somehow his feet and been placed in concrete blocks. He’d been beaten and a mixture of blood and sweat was falling from his head onto his shirt. He peered backwards and stared at a possible watery death… A solitary figure stood in front of him. The figure held up a can. It looked like a can of baked beans. Tom’s confusion turned to fear as the dark figure removed the ring and brought it up to his face. Slowly the assailant carved cuts in Tom’s cheek. His screams echoed around the empty building…

10 minutes In your opening you must establish your location and your main character. This is called the exposition. Use the model provided to help you with sentence starters.

Feedback What went well? Even better?

5 minutes Now continue your story and try to incorporate your object. TIP! Make sure that you are writing in your chosen genre!

Feedback What went well… Even better if…

Plenary On the post-it provided, write down one thing that you are particularly happy with in your story and one target for improvement. Place the post-it on the door and place your object back in the bag. Put all unwanted paper in the recycling bin.
