Intro: Muscular, saclike organ Connects the esophagus and small intestine.

Focus Questions: What are the three parts of the stomach? Where is the stomach located?

Anatomy Is divided into three parts: –Fundus –Corpus –Antrum Secretes hormones, acid, mucus and proteases.

Physiology The stomach has three main functions: –Kill parasites and bad bacteria that is digested. –Breakdown the food into smaller particles. –Temporarily holds food and releases it at a constant rate down to the lower parts of the digestive system.

Location: On the left side of the body under the diaphragm It is located between the esophagus and small intestine.

Stomach Ulcers Is a small hole in the gastrointestinal tract. The size ranges between 1/8 of an inch to 3/4 Ulcers in the stomach are called Gastric ulcers. They are not contagious or cancerous. Stomach ulcers are very common

Signs and Symptoms: loss of appetite sudden, sharp stomach pains nausea frequent burping or hiccupping weight loss vomiting bloody or blackish bowel movements

Diagnosis Process First they do a physical examination Then ask about past health problems, meds you are taking, your families history of health and allergies Then they perform a serious of test: –upper gastrointestinal (GI) series –Endoscopy

Treatments: They are treated by medicines prescribed by a doctor They antibacterial kills the bacteria and reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. If you smoke or drink alcoholic beverages you are also required to quit because they inhibits or forbids the healing of the ulcer

Interesting Facts: When you blush, the lining of your stomach also turns red. Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks, otherwise it will digest itself. The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razorblades.
