5 What the Research Says… When education is valued in the home:  Children receive higher grades and higher test scores  Children attend school more regularly  Children complete school assignments  Children demonstrate more positive behaviors and attitudes  Children graduate from high school at higher rates  Children are more likely to enroll in higher education. of 17

6 What Is Title I? Oldest and largest federally funded program under Elementary Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 $ Awarded based on level of Free & Reduced Lunch Title I focus is on improving academic achievement of children who need extra support to meet challenging academic standards. of 17

7 Types of Title I Programs NCLB makes provision for two types of Title I schools: Targeted Assistance Schools School-wide Program Schools LMMS BECAME A SCHOOL WIDE PROGRAM FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR Little Mill Middle School Awarded Highest Performing Title I School (Top 5% in Georgia) School Year of 17

8 School-wide Program The school’s Title I funds are coordinated with other funds to implement reforms to upgrade the entire educational program. The program’s goal is to improve the overall academic performance of all children in the school. All students are Title I participants. of 17

9 Schoolwide Title I Funds – Support of Parent Involvement Parent Involvement Policy – explains what we will do for parents and how we will do it Parent-School Compact – agreement between school, home and student to ensure success Title I Parent Involvement Requirements of 17

10 Parent Involvement Funds 1% of the school’s total Title I allocation must be set aside for activities that support the involvement of parents of children who are Title I eligible. These parents must be substantively involved in decision-making regarding the use of these funds. Schools must follow these recommendations to the extent that they are allowable and feasible Parent Survey – complete the survey found in your packet so that YOU can choose what materials and programs will be available to you and your children Hours of Operation Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8am - 2pm Tuesday/Thursday 8am - 2pm/4pm - 8pm Saturdays 9am - 1pm of 17

11 Parent Involvement Policy (PIP)  The PIP is developed by the Principal in consultation with the parents and students  The PIP must be distributed to all parents  The district policy will be up for vote soon. You can find a copy in the FRC. of 17

12 The school policy must specify: How parents will be included in the development of school-level parent involvement activities funded through Title I How parents will be involved in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of school-level programs funded through Title I Parent Involvement Policy (PIP) of 17

13 School-Parent Compact  Is a written agreement developed jointly by school, parents/caregivers and students.  Outlines how parents, entire school staff, and students will share responsibility for improved student academic achievement of 17

14 Levels of Participation and Leadership:  School – Variety of ways to volunteer in service and/or leadership roles at LMMS  District – Parent Advisory Committee for the district  Parent Institute – a class run by the district to educate parents as leaders Levels of Parent Leadership of 17

15 Parent Leadership – School Level LMMS hosts a Family Engagement Action Team (FEAT) which serves as the consultative body for parents to engage in meaningful discussion of issues related to the school’s Title I programs. Any parent/caregiver may volunteer to be a member of the FEAT Please visit the FRC today for more information on this and other volunteer opportunities at LMMS of 17
