Basic Concepts in Principles of Design Proportion Scale Balance: Symmetrical Asymmetrical Emphasis Rhythm : Repetition Gradation Transition Radiation

Proportion-Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design. Though the overhead lights dwarf the counter below, the overall out of proportion scale works as it draws the eye to the bar or counter. Hence more customers.

Scale refers to the size of an object in relation to either people it serves or what it is next to. Over stuffed sofa does well with large coffee table. Look at the fireplace. How does it fit? The hall table fits well with the mirror above it.

Balance- Symmetrical One side mirrors the opposite side

Describe the balance used on the fireplace . Asymmetrical Balance- not equal on each side. Look visually at whole room for balance and then the fireplace. What do you see? Describe the balance used on the fireplace .

Asymmetrical- More Examples

What is the emphasis or focal point in this room? Focal point or emphasis is the feature in an arrangement, room or design that draws the eye immediately to it. Often used to build design around it. What is the emphasis or focal point in this room?

Focal Point or Emphais Again

Rhythm- Repetition- Lines or designs give repeated excitement to the room.

Transition- How do the curved lines add transition to this room? Rhythm Transition refers to the meeting of lines and designs or how they flow from one type to another. Transition- How do the curved lines add transition to this room?

Rhythm- Gradation- Similar object go from small to large. Both of the examples show object appearing from small to large. The one on the left is a delusion, right actual sizes.

Gradation is the repetition of shapes from one size to another’ How was gradation used?

Rhythm Radiation-Lines radiate out from the center

What can you describe about the design principles used in this room?
