SCATS 6.10 Release Review SMUG, March 2013 Sydney

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10 Release Review This presentation describes the new features and changes introduced in SCATS 6.10 Commercial Release.

SMUG 2013 Corporate Delivery Plan ( ) Improve the efficiency of the road network during peak times on Sydney’s road corridors, including supporting road based public transport.  Develop an Intelligent Transport System Strategy to drive the ongoing development of the SCATS and associated traffic management systems.  Develop the Smart Managed Motorways concept for the M4 Motorway to improve travel flow efficiency and road user safety.

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: Objectives Improvement of traffic management capabilities through the addition of new features as well as enhancements of existing SCATS functionality. Provide a better interface to external ITS applications. Lay down the foundation for future SCATS technologies (i.e. new TRAFF protocol support). Improve existing Ramp Metering management within SCATS.

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: Scope Improve traffic management: re-engineer adaptive SCATS Improve intersection diagnostics: New History File & Walks Introduce robust repository: Site Inventory Improve interoperability: New ITS messages Enhanced monitoring: New Picture & Tablet Interface Continuity: New TRAFF protocol

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS Commence the re-engineering of some of the SCATS adaptive operations that are handled via variation routines which limit us to modify, enhance or add new features such as supporting more than 4 phases in ISS operations. Three variation routines will be enhanced in the next release: VR35 - Incremental Split Selection (ISS) VR43 - Diamond Overlap phase control VR59 - SD control of a diamond phase New operations will be optional in 6.10 – trial & feedback

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS – cont’d VR35 (ISS) limitations Intersections with 2, 3 and 4 phases ISS table do not contain all possible combinations Maximum increment split value is limited to +/- 4 Introduce all possible combinations for all phases and configure max split value for each phase

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS – cont’d VR43 - Diamond Overlap phase control Two modes of operation Introduce trailing turn if it’s in the selected split plan Introduce trailing turn Based on voting result Simple thresholds Cycle length Bay time

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS – cont’d Improved Strategic Approach VR59 - SD control of a diamond phase VR83 - Test an SA for congestion Configurable voting

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS – cont’d Allow SA specific options Instead of setting these options from subsystem options Allow SA voting based on DS or volume, and conditional voting (VR59) Allow SA gating/congestion control (VR83)

SMUG 2013 Improve Adaptive SCATS – cont’d

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: New History File Combine the information already logged by HIST and IDM files as well as log additional new information One daily file per Region for ALL intersections, incrementally sent to Central Manager, similar to SM and VS Additional information that will be stored in the new history file All Walks (including Secret) External I/O (XSF, MSS) Alarms to be recorded as state changes

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: Walk Definitions Provide ability to define all walks in SCATS Option to chose SCATS or controller managed Allow empty walks remove sequential walks definition Visibility of ALL walk states New history file to include start/termination request/ended

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: Site Inventory Provide configurable data storage and report mechanism Import existing Site Details Line, Names, Camera etc Capture equipment details Log changes Add new information Power Supplier, Network Provider In Service/Out Service

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: New ITS messages Keep existing ITS as it is Introduce new port/protocol that allows new paradigm – extendable & authenticated Closer integration with SRMS Provide access to more Central Manager functionalities – special dates Interoperability

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: New Picture Provide real-world layout for intersections Support new requirements Design and implement SCATS Spatial Data Easier to integrate other systems ITS extension to manage intersection pictures Import/Export spatial attributes

SMUG 2013 SCATS 6.10: New TRAFF Protocol Open paths to improve intersection efficiency, responsiveness and provide data reporting to improve network coordination Plan-based operation Increase number of phases, approach timers etc. Allow phase order to be variable Supporting mechanism to repeat any phase in the sequence Send all signal group colours to SCATS Green, Yellow, Red, and flashing state
