The Future of CRIS Connectedness Identity Open Access Decision Making

Connectedness In 2012 a CRIS is still primarily : A System of record Reporting Systems/ Management information systems A means of supporting statutory returns But a future CRIS will also become much more about: Sharing research inside an institution and outside an institution (communications tool) Tool for research discovery Connecting researchers Finding research synergies across many institutions (public & private) We may see widespread establishment of more virtual research groups (shared research initiatives on a grand scale between institutions across the globe)

Connectedness This will be achieved through working with open standards – structural, vocabularies, exchange formats etc:

Identity Currently, there are hundreds of different identity systems: Social/Professional network Institutional

Identity Currently, there are hundreds of different identity systems: Social/Professional network Institutional

Open Access CRIS has a critical role to play in opening up research In a drive for higher quality data, CRIS providers will need to innovate ways to capture data earlier in the research process. This will naturally lead to even closer ties between the CRIS and Open Access. This won’t be limited to bibliographic content but will be based about sharing the whole research process.

Open Access

Decision Making This wider world of data that institutions will wish to collect, archive and use will pose new challenges for CRIS providers in how to: Present data Interpret data Package data for strategic decision-makers

Global Decision Making Sharing data won’t be just for academic staff but for administrative staff and decision makers too. Data sharing will become much more commonplace for the purposes of benchmarking research and for finding the best fit for research collaborations The business of research will move to become less competitive and (partially driven by government cuts in research funding) more collaborative, more efficient – utilizing facilities worldwide. Research will move towards a non-competitive funding model.
