Types of Galaxies 25.3 The Universe In addition to shape and size, one of the major differences among different types of galaxies is the age of their stars. Irregular galaxies contain young stars.  Irregular Galaxies Only 10 percent of the known galaxies have irregular shapes and are classified as irregular galaxies. The Expanding Universe 25.3 The Universe Red shift, or a Doppler shift toward the red end of the spectrum, occurs because the light waves are “stretched,” which shows that Earth and the source are moving away from each other.  Red Shifts Hubble’s law is a law that states that the galaxies are retreating from the Milky Way at a speed that is proportional to their distance.  Hubble’s Law The red shifts of distant galaxies indicate that the universe is expanding.
