H E L P!

Religion & Fully Alive  Theme: Who is God?

Language Reading  Students are assessed in class according to board benchmark assessments.  Helps determine an independent reading level.  Daily at home reading is essential in your child's success in becoming a proficient reader (Snuggle Up, Shared Reading and Raz-Kids).  Strategies learned at school can be extended when reading at home. Pointing to each word, sounding out, chunking, etc. How you as a parent can assist your child:  Daily Reading  When reading: make prediction, picture walks, decoding words, retell the story  Ask your child questions at the end of the story to check understanding  Don’t worry if it’s a struggle, reading takes time and is best when it’s a habit

Language Continued Snuggle Up & Read  It is a self-selected text (not leveled to your child's independent level)  You do not need to return the book on a daily basis.  Use strategies to help your child read and decode new words.  Discuss: Character, events, setting, problem and solution, ask “why do you think….? Raz-Kids Program  Interactive at home reading program.  Students are provided with leveled texts and on some levels there are quizzes to assess understanding.  It reports back to the teacher to help monitor your child`s progress.  Bonus stars are awarded to buy items for their personal Raz- Rocket  You as parents can send your child messages encouraging them and their online reading.

Language Continued Word Study  5 weekly words along with the homework.  New words will be written in your child's agenda every Monday.  Please review throughout the week.  Phonics, Vowel Sounds, Word Families and Making Words activities. Writing  Goal: generate, gather and organize ideas and information.  Write for intended audience and purpose.  Forms: List writing, retell, letter writing and journal writing.

Language Continued Oral Communication  Ability to effectively communicate.  The ability to listen effectively in order to understand and respond appropriately. Media Literacy  Understand a variety of media texts and how these forms attract a specific audience.

Mathematics Parent letters are sent home at the beginning of all units outlining what you can do with your child at home to help assist in his/her learning along with expectations.
