Johns Hopkins 2010 United Way Campaign Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow About United Way United Way of Central Maryland’s Mission: Mobilize the Community to Improve People’s Lives.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow About United Way United Way’s Value We help those who are most vulnerable We understand what works We help donors and the community make informed choices We understand the community’s needs For 85 years, United Way of Central Maryland has been a partner in addressing health and human needs across the region. None of us expect to suddenly be unable to provide the basics for ourselves and our loved ones. But in this economy it can happen to the best of us. United Way of Central Maryland’s safety net is there to help catch those in need.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Basic Needs Continuum United Way of Central Maryland is focused on: Getting people out of crisis, keeping people out of crisis and helping people achieve a better quality of life.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why Basic Needs? It’s where the data leads us... It’s What the Data From Calls to Tell Us...

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why Basic Needs? It’s where the data leads us... Poverty is Everywhere. Concentrations of poverty are all over Baltimore City …the darker the spots, the poorer the neighborhoods.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why Basic Needs? It’s where the data leads us... Pockets of poverty exist everywhere in central Maryland

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Did You Know? The Effects of the Recession are Not Over Yet:  There are more calls for help. They are more complex. Last year 96,564 people received information and referrals to help them with housing, utility assistance, food, financial assistance or income support and much more through Maryland at United Way.  “Point In Time” Census of Homelessness from : Anne Arundel INCREASED by 15% Baltimore City INCREASED BY 12% Carroll INCREASED by 13% Harford declined by 5% Howard INCREASED by 29%

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Did You Know? The Effects of the Recession are Not Over Yet: People are losing their homes – More than 14,000 evictions took place in central Maryland. Affordable, safe housing is hard to find – Fair market rent for a two- bedroom apartment in central Maryland is $1,037 – meaning it costs more than two minimum wage jobs! Homelessness impacts kids – Average age of a homeless person is 9. Homeless children are less successful in school. Child care is out of reach for many working parents – Quality child care ranks as one of the two top household expenses in across Maryland

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why United Way? We make the most of time, energy and dollars for the greatest good Last year, our fundraising, educational efforts and programs resulted in more than 1,600 nonprofits receiving support. This allowed them to focus on what matters most – helping people in need – without spending time or incurring the costs of raising the funds themselves.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why United Way? We make sure the work gets done right AND bring even more $$ back to central Maryland Local, respected experts help us understand what works. That’s how we ensure your gift goes to where it gets real results. United Way doesn’t stop there – we rallied more than 3,000 volunteers who gave 97,597 volunteer hours of service – that’s $2,034,897 infused into the local economy. We also managed a $9.5 million federal grant to help people get and/or stay in affordable housing and helped bring in part of the statewide $17 million returned to individuals and families through free income tax preparation. That means more money for low-income people who are suffering most from the recession.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why United Way? You can trust us. We account for each dollar spent. Every year we receive the highest rating possible in our annual independent audit. We also hold the “Standards For Excellence” certification from MANO. United Way is one of nearly 80 nonprofits across the state and 200 across the country to have earned this seal.

Give Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow Why United Way? We respect your right to make your own choice. We gladly share information to help you make an informed choice, but it is YOUR choice. You can choose “United Way of Central Maryland” and give to urgent basic needs like food, shelter and access to healthcare or give through us to any health & human service organization in the U.S.
