2 Poor America Poor American is consider individuals who are living in Poverty. Poverty is a condition where individuals lack the basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing. Currently, 37 million people live in poverty, 5 million are homeless and 43 million are without health insurance.  The Census Bureau defines a household as poor if its “income” falls below specific thresholds. (In 2014, the poverty threshold for a family of four was $24,008.) But in counting “income,” the Census Bureau excludes nearly all welfare benefits.

3 National Problem The national dilemma is adversely about increasing funding for social services programs so individuals who are struggling be able to be independent or decrease funding so or delegate this social service program to private organizations or charities to take care of the poor and low income families. The current proponents is for federal funding to social service program to not be increased> Americans should find jobs, because US is the richest country and there is jobs for people. However many states, unemployment is still at its highest and without the government helps most poor families will likely to stay poor.

4 Social Services Role in Poor America
The Federal government offers many programs to assist the poor. The federal government duty is to provide the basic necessities of life—such as shelter, food and health care—without which no American can hope to achieve happiness, supporters contend. Antipoverty Programs in the United States- includes: Social Security Unemployment Insurance Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Medicare Medicaid State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Head State National School Lunch Program Federal Pell Grant Program Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women , Infants, and Children (WIC) Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Housing Choice Vouchers (HUD) Employment and Training Administration (ETA)

5 “Social Safety Net” The term “social safety net” is a collective of state and federal programs that is provide to individuals and families. The Welfare program is to protect low income and poor families from poverty and hardship. The term safety is the assistance from the government where a person is helped through the various program from the movement to catch individuals and families during hard times. The goal of social services program is to help individuals get back to working and supporting themselves and their families.

6 “Deepen America’s recession”
In 2007, United States hit a great recession, during this year, the stock market lose half of its values, unemployment was at the rise and was increasing each month, the number of poor Americans was at a high threshold and the economy has a experience. This recession was during President Bush Administration. During Obama administration in 2008, he proposed and promoted social safety net programs for the poor that expanded unemployment benefits and created more jobs to strengthen the economy and U.S. infrastructure.

7 US Poverty Threshold for Families
In 2014, 47 million people lived in Poverty USA. That means the poverty rate for 2014 was 15% Americans who make less than the Federal government’s official poverty threshold, which for a family of four is $24, People working at minimum wage, even holding down several jobs. Seniors living on fixed incomes. Wage earners suddenly out of work. Millions of families everywhere from our cities to rural communities.

8 President Lyndon Johnson
President Johnson also pledged to have legislation passed to help the poor. President Johnson proposed a war on poverty arose from the ongoing concern that America had not done enough to provide socioeconomic opportunities for the underclass. Legislation that were passed included: Medicaid Medicare Education Work Opportunities for families

9 President Quote "The Great Society is a place where every child can find knowledge to enrich his mind and to enlarge his talents.... It is a place where the city of man serves not only the needs of the body and the demands of commerce but the desire for beauty and the hunger for community.“ In President Johnson quotes, the goal was to end poverty. Every child deserve an opportunity to be education through he education act and through the job training act that provided assistance to single parents. President Johnson speech resonated with millions of Americans because of his desire to offer and reestablished social services programs opportunities for American families.
