SUNY Canton & SUNY Potsdam: Administrative Alliance Fostering Shared Services

NACUBO National Association of College and University Business Officers NACUBO is a membership organization representing more than 2,500 colleges, universities, and higher education service providers across the country and around the world. NACUBO specifically represents chief business and financial officers through advocacy efforts, community service, and professional development activities. The association's mission is to advance the economic viability and business practices of higher education institutions in fulfillment of their academic missions.

NACUBO INNOVATION AWARD 2013 The two colleges are sharing services in areas such as purchasing, budget, accounts payable, travel and information technology. They also share a chief information officer, chief of police, assistant vice president for human resources, environmental health and safety director, veteran’s affairs officer, interlibrary loan specialist, upholster and other positions. NACUBO INNOVATION AWARD 2013 The National Association of College and University Business Officers presented SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam with the 2013 Innovation Award for their achievements in shared services. The Innovation Award recognizes higher education institutions for demonstrating excellence in process improvements and resource enhancements. Under the leadership of joint Vice President Natalie L. Higley, the two colleges have realized significant administrative efficiencies and financial savings by sharing the positions.

Memorandum of Understanding: SUNY Canton & SUNY Potsdam Signed in July 2013, The MOU was entered into by SUNY Campuses at Canton and Potsdam to define the scope of collaborative ventures in three key areas: Shared Services, Shared Purchase and Shared Academic Programs. The overall goal of the joint agreements is to make both campuses function better while reducing overall costs. Both campuses are committed to working together in each of the three areas, knowing that a joint approach can improve the services provided to students, faculty, staff and/or community members. Both campuses are committed to ensuring the integrity of the mission and the brand of each individual campus.

Memorandum of Understanding: SUNY Canton & SUNY Potsdam Shared Services – each campus is committed to sharing services that normally fall within the definition of “back office” activities. Shared Purchases – leveraging buying power. Shared Academic Programs – the SUNY Institute of Arts, Sciences and Technology’s agreed upon mission “is to use the assets of SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam to create new shared opportunities. The core mission of the institute is to provide a mechanism to allow and facilitate the development of academic collaborations between SUNY canton, SUNY Potsdam and possibly the other regional academic institutions…”
