WHAT ARE THE 5 FIELDS OF SOCIAL STUDIES? If you don’t remember, look it up in your textbook.

1.History 2. Geography 3. Government 4. Economics 5. Culture Remember the 5 Fields of Social Studies??

Well, there are 5 Themes of Geography: 1. Location 2. Place 3. Region 4. Movement 5. HEI (Human-Environment Interaction)

- Tells where a place is. LOCATION (There are 2 different types of Location) ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION

ABSOLUTE LOCATION - The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found.

Latitude and Longitude lines tell ABSOLUTE LOCATION.

A street address is also an ABSOLUTE LOCATION. Baines Middle School 9000 Sienna Ranch Road Missouri City, Texas 77459

RELATIVE LOCATION - The location of one place in relation to other places.

When someone asks you where you live, you tell them you live “Near Houston” rather than saying, “in Missouri City.” Believe it or not, most people just don’t know where we are!

PLACE - Tells what it is like in a specific area.

Is it hot there? Are the winters bitter cold? Is it a dry climate, or does it rain a lot? What types of plants grow there? Is it a crowded city? Is it a wide open prairie? What type of government do they have there? Are there any interesting traditions in the area? PLACE

REGION - A group of places that have physical features or human characteristics in common.

The Rocky Mountains

The American Southwest

The Great Lakes

The Arctic

MOVEMENT - The movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another.

Early humans chased herds of animals across continents.

In 1990, Mrs. Flynn moved from New York to Texas.

, sending letters, and making phone calls are all forms of movement of ideas. Writing Letters Phone Calls

Transportation Corridor A path that makes movement easier.

Transportation Barrier Something that gets in the way of movement and makes it more difficult

HEI - Human-Environment Interaction occurs because humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the world around them.

In the case of hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and flooding, humans have to adapt to the changes in their environment.

Humans clear land for new homes and neighborhoods.

Farming is another example of how humans modify the world around them.

Now imagine for a minute that you are a newspaper reporter. An important discovery of a lost land has been made, and you have the chance to be the first person to interview the returning explorers. Make a list of the questions that you might ask. Remember, the five themes and ask the most important questions from each. Label each question with the theme it corresponds to.

Now imagine for a minute that you are a newspaper reporter. An important discovery of a lost land has been made, and you have the chance to be the first person to interview the returning explorers. Copy the list of questions on the next slide. Label each question with the theme it corresponds to. Try to think of at least two more questions that you could ask.

Where is it? Where exactly is that? Is it prone to any type of natural disaster? How many people live there and where? What settlements (cities, villages) does it have? What sort of climate does it have? What are the main types of transportation and communication? Is it associated with any other place? What are the natural resources and how are they used? What sort of government does it have?
