1 5 Themes of Geography Unit 1 What is it? -and- How is it studied?

2 Geography Geographers It is the study of the Earth’s surface and everything in or on it the ones doing the studying They do this by describing a place by finding its physical and human characteristics Examine the details and the relationships

3 Geographers ask 2 basic questions… 5 Themes of Geography Where is it located? Why is it there? Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Movement Region

4 Theme 4: Movement Movement How and why people travel Shows the connectedness in the mobility of people and their ideas, language, goods Ex: Jewish families leaving German-occupied Europe Refugees: People who flee an area Bring and spread their own culture… People become connected to and dependent on others

5 Theme 5: Region Region You can make comparisons on how a region has changed over time by looking at… An area on the earth's surface that has unifying characteristics (common interests) Climate –Tropical or dry Land –Mtns. or plains Population –Dense or Sparse Industry –Farming or Banking For example, states in a region have the same… –Climate –Grow the same crops –Have the same accents

6 Theme 3: Human Environment Interaction (HEI) Human-Environment Interaction (HEI) Theme Main Ideas: Geographers also use H-E-I how humans adapt to, modify and depend on the environment how people modify their environment how people depend on their environment how people adapt to their environment to discuss consequences (good or bad) of people’s actions Lasting affects

7 Theme 1: Location Location Absolute Location Relative Location first step in studying a place… learn of its location Exact place on the Earth. Street Address or Latitude and Longitude (30N, 45E) Explains where a place is by describing what it’s near By directions N, S, E, W What its near Distance from something

8 Theme 2: Place Place Physical Characteristics Human Characteristics Describes what it’s like there to distinguish one place from another place To describe…may speak of mountains, rivers, beaches, and animal and plant life of a place. To describe…may speak of population, what the people look like, or man-made features (cities, etc.)
