What’s Inside?. The Earth’s Core – Almost as hot as the surface of the sun (due to radioactive decay) Escape of this inner heat drives geological activity.

Earth’s Interior Chapter 4 Section1

What is a geologist? What is Geology? Geologists are scientists who study the forces that make and shape planet earth. Geology- is the study of planet Earth. What is geology video 1 min

What are the two types of forces? Geologists divide the forces that change earth’s surface into two forces: Constructive- builds land up (mountains) Ex: earthquakes, volcanoes, and deposition Destructive – wears away the land. Ex: weathering

How do we know what the inside of the Earth is made out of? Geologist use the data record from seismic waves created by earthquakes. They study how they travel through earth and predict what the interior of Earth is made of. Seismic waves video

Describe the two types of crust. What are they made of? Layers of the Earth Crust – The layer of rock that forms earth’s outer skin. Two Types of Crust –Oceanic crust is mostly made of Basalt rock. –Continental crust –made mostly of Granite.

Mantle Describe the two layers of the mantle. Mantle (Middle Layer) Made of two layers –Asthenosphere – the upper layer of the mantle and is made of molten magma. (tar or pudding like) –Lower mantle- made of hot solid magma.

What two layers does the lithosphere consist of. The lithosphere is a solid layer made of the crust and upper part of mantle. Lithosphere video clip

Describe the two layers of the core. The_Inner_Core videoThe_Inner_Core video The core video.asf Core Two Layers of the core –Outer core is a layer of molten metal –Inner core is a dense ball of solid metal. The metal is made of iron and nickel.
