After the American Revolution, Georgians began to move West

 Only a few Georgians had a few years of elementary education  Few could read or do math  Few schools in the state even thought Governor Hall recommended that land be set aside for schools

 In 1784, the government set aside 20,000 acres of land for a state College.  1785 – the University of Georgia was chartered as the 1st land grant university in US (land donated by federal government)

 Opened in 1801 in Athens (Clarke County)  Was to oversee all public schools in the state.  Students were all white, males.  First building was Franklin College.  Women were not admitted until 1918.

 As people moved throughout the state, the capitol changed to the center of the populated areas  At first the capital rotated between Savannah and Augusta.

 A commission was appointed and given funds to purchase 1,000 acres of land for a city that was to be the capital modeled after Philadelphia. Had to be within 20 miles of an Indian trading post on the Ogeechee River Had to be named after King Louis XVI of France.

 The big thing that happened while Louisville was the state capital.  February 21, 1796  Records from the Yazoo land sales were collected and burned in front of the Capitol

 As more Indian lands opened, Georgians continued to move west.  In 1804, the legislature voted to build a new capital in Milledgeville.(Baldwin County)  Named after Governor John Milledge.
