Computer Parts By: Kayla Alvarez Period: A2

A modem is an electronic device that makes the transmission of data to or from a computer via telephone or other communication lines, possible. If it's an internal modem, then it will be mounted on the motherboard, like the sound card, etc. Look for a phone jack at the back of your pc. If there is one, then that is your modem. If it's an external one, then it will be plugged to the back of your computer, either using a USB cable or a serial cable. If it is an Ethernet modem then it will be plugged to an Ethernet card which is also mounted on the motherboard, but it has a slightly bigger phone jack. MODEM

 The main circuit board of your computer; also known as the mainboard or logic board.  It is located inside the computer tower case or laptop case and is usually screwed/bolted to the inside of the case.

Network Interface Card(NIC)  A network card is the interface between a computer and a network cable. The reason for a network card is to prepare, send, and control data on the network.  It is inside of the computer

 A sound card provides a high-quality stereo sound output under program control. One of the best, is the Sound Blaster.  Inside of the computer

A Computer Case is the outer shell of a computer. Case

CPU  The CPU is the brains of the computer, where most calculations/functions occur.

 A computer fan is any fan inside, used for active cooling, and move hot air to a component that needs cooling. The fan is located in the side of the computer

MONITOR A device that displays signals on a computer screen. It is the main screen

Video Card 0 A device inside a computer, that shows the output of the computer. 0 Can be located directly on the motherboard, or be an add-on installed into a slot in the motherboard.

Output Device Any device outputs information. Output devices can be: monitors, speakers, headphones, printers, projectors, etc.

INPUT DEVICE  Any device that provides input to the computer.  A keyboard, mouse, and microphones, tell the computer what (operation) to do/complete.

Software  A computer program  Examples are: CD-ROMs, DVDs, and Binary Data

K EYBOARD Board of keys; used to write through technology Attachment, usually plugged into the computer, but can also be wireless.

 Can have one or two buttons to send signals to the computer, telling it what to do.  Attachment; usually plugged into the computer, but can also be wireless.

 A CD-ROM is a CD that can be read by a computer.  A DVD, which stands for Digital Video Disk, stores memory of some kind, and can be played in the disk drive.  Blue Ray, in the form of a CD/DVD, is used for storing large amounts of data, and playback in HD.

HARD DRIVE Stores data The data is stored inside the disks that are mounted inside a solid encasement. A hard drive is located inside of a computer.

Ram/Rom/BIOS Ram is a form of internal memory, and is used to store temporary programs. Rom is another form of internal memory, that is used to store critical information, such as booting programs. BIOS-Basic Input Output System- (video, mouse, keyboard, sound, network,) starts up as soon as computer turns on.

 Dissipates heat from the processer, preventing it from overheating.  Located (inside the back of the computer.)
