SAS Activity: Accessing PA Standards in the Standards Aligned System Objectives… Teachers will be able to use SAS to access the PA State Standards in each subject area to enable them to find, view, and utilize standards to help guide instruction, intervention, and assessment. Teachers will be able to utilize the Vertical Viewer in SAS to access the standards to develop “Student-friendly” standards based objectives. This task will become part of the teachers’ portfolio.

To begin…think of an activity or lesson you enjoy sharing with your students. Record it in the table provided and identify the grade level. Then Log on to SAS: Click on “Clear Standards” Click on “Vertical Viewer” Click on the Subject Area (for example: Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening) that relates to the lesson you recorded. Review the standards and click on the one that matches the lesson you recorded (for example 1.1 Reading Independently).

Find your grade level (you may need to click on “See Grades PK-3) Click the standard that matches the lesson you recorded (for example a. Identify the author’s purpose and type using grade level text). Read the standard. Use this standard to write a standards-based, student-friendly learning objective for the activity you recorded. Next, look at the grade level before and after yours to review the standard expectation. Record the differences you see for each grade level (before and after).

In Conclusion… This “path” of navigation is one way to use SAS as a resource to become more familiar with standards and to assist with the development of strong posted classroom objectives. Please include your completed activity in your portfolio for this school year.
