1 MIGRANT LITERACY NET GUIDE FOR TEACHERS: USING TUTORIALS November 2012 www.migrantliteracynet.com

2 PURPOSE: TO HELP MIGRANT STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR READING PROFICIENCY SO THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS AND LIFELONG LEARNERS  The Migrant Literacy NET is designed to address the reading needs of migrant students by creating online student tutorials that align with the Migrant Literacy NET (MLN) reading lessons, screening assessments, and an online electronic student portfolio to document student learning and progress that can be accessed by migrant educators across the nation.

3 LOG ON Register a user name and password to access the resources Your state migrant director must give you access to tutorials

4 ONCE LOGGED ON SELECT SUCCESS PLANS

5 “CLICK HERE” WILL OPEN THE SCREEN WHICH ALLOWS THE TEACHER TO CREATE SUCCESS PLANS AND ASSIGN TUTORIALS Click on “New Student” to add students and create success plans

6 TO CREATE A NEW SUCCESS PLAN PROVIDE STUDENT NAME AND CLICK ‘ADD STUDENT’

7 COMPLETE THE TOP PART OF THE SUCCESS PLAN FOR EACH STUDENT BASED ON THE STUDENTS NEEDS. PLEASE CLICK “UPDATE” TO SAVE CHANGES TO THE SUCCESS PLAN

8 AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH SUCCESS PLAN THE TEACHER CAN ASSIGN TUTORIALS TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS FROM A LIST OF LESSONS AND TUTORIALS THAT RELATE TO THOSE LESSONS. TUTORIALS CAN BE ASSIGNED IN ENGLISH, SPANISH OR BOTH Click here for lessons Click here for tutorials

9 ASSIGN TUTORIALS Click here to assign tutorial Then click “Student List” at the top of the Success Plan

10 ONCE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED TUTORIALS THE SYSTEM WILL ASSIGN STUDENTS USER NAMES & PASSWORDS TEACHERS MUST PROVIDE USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS TO STUDENTS

11 STUDENTS CAN USE THEIR USER NAME AND PASSWORD TO LOG ON FROM ANYWHERE

12 ONCE A STUDENT LOGS IN, TUTORIALS ASSIGNED TO HIM/HER WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN. STUDENTS CAN THEN SELECT FROM THE LIST OF TUTORIALS ASSIGNED TO THEM AND COMPLETE THE WORK. Students cannot access the teachers success plans from this screen.

13 FIRST STUDENTS COMPLETE A PRE-TEST. IF THEY SCORE LESS THAN 80% ON THE PRE- TEST THEN THE TUTORIAL AUTOMATICALLY STARTS. IF THEY SCORE 80% OR HIGHER THE SYSTEM WILL INDICATE THAT THE STUDENT HAS MASTERED THESE SKILLS AND DOESN’T NEED THIS TUTORIAL. THE SYSTEM WILL TAKE THE STUDENT BACK TO MAIN TUTORIALS SCREEN.

14 STUDENTS WORK THROUGH TUTORIALS AT THEIR OWN PACE. THEY CAN STOP AT ANY POINT AND RESUME LATER UNTIL THEY COMPLETE THE TUTORIAL

15 After completion of the tutorial students complete the post-test to assess what they learned.

16 The pre-test and post-test is scored by the system and recorded on the students Success Plan

17 Students can then chose to work on other assigned tutorials

18 TRANSFERRING SUCCESS PLANS: TEACHERS CAN ACCESS SUCCESS PLANS FROM OTHER TEACHERS

19 CLICK ON ‘FIND’ AND ENTER STUDENTS’ LAST NAME Click here to transfer student to your list
