Independent Variable Dependent Variable Trials Replicates Controls (Constants) Tools Data Tables Precision Accuracy Systematic Error Random Error VOCABULARYVOCABULARY

Domain-General Investigations (minimizes the role of prior knowledge) - Generates observations/measurements that induce a claim that can account for a pattern (Discovery) – Example – Law of the Pendulum: isolate the 3 variables (length of string, size of weight, height weight is released) to determine which variables influences the period/time of swing. (Requires only one lesson)

Domain-Specific Investigations (infuses the role of prior knowledge) -Tests an existing model or theory (Confirmation/Verification) – Example – Challenge students to determine all the factors that affect the swing of a pendulum, including mathematical relationships. Then, without allowing students to test, have them predict the length of time of swing of a randomly configured pendulum. (Requires a sequence of lessons)

1.Within this practice, what new skills must students become proficient at as they move from the lower grade span to the higher grade span? 2. What questions do you have about the requirements of the standards?
