The Symbols of Texas The Lone Star State

Texas is a big state with many important symbols.

One of our most famous symbols is Remember what happened here?

Spanish French Spanish Mexican Republic of Texas United States Confederate States United States to the present. Flags are symbols. Texas has had six different flags in its history.

The Lone Star Flag The state flag's colors represent the same virtues as they do in the national flag: Red means bravery; white, purity; and blue, loyalty. Texas has a nickname. It is known as the Lone Star State.

We say the Texas pledge. "Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible."

Texas, our Texas! All hail the mighty state! Texas, our Texas! So wonderful so great! Boldest and grandest, Withstanding ev'ry test; O Empire wide and glorious, You stand supremely blest. God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong, That you may grow in power and worth, Thro'out the ages long. State Song Click on the Web site below to hear the state anthem.

Our state capitol is a symbol. You will find this building in Austin, Texas, our capital city.

This is the State Seal.

This seal is on the floor of the capitol rotunda under the dome.

This monument is for the Battle at San Jacinto. Sam Houston led the Texans to victory for Independence when they won the battle at San Jacinto.

The state flower of Texas is the bluebonnet. It is also called buffalo clover, wolf flower and el conejo (the rabbit). The bluebonnet was adopted as the state flower, on request of the Society of Colonial Dames in Texas, by the 27th Legislature, 1901.

State Bird: Mockingbird State Tree: Pecan What led to its official adoption probably grew out of the request of Gov. James Stephen Hogg that a pecan tree be planted at his grave.

The Texas motto is…..“Friendship!” The word, Texas, or Tejas, was the Spanish pronunciation of a Caddo Indian word meaning "friends" or "allies."

Texans are proud of their state and its symbols!
