3 1.Texas is the largest state in the contiguous 48 states but is the second largest state in the US overall. 2.Texas became a state on December 29, 1845. 3.Texas was the 28 th state. 4.People who live in Texas are called Texans. 5.Austin was established as capital of Texas in 1839. 6.The Austin capital building looks similar to the US capitol. 7.Other major cities include San Antonio, Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth. 8.Texas gets its name from a Tribe of Indians called “Tejas”. 9.Texas has over 2.5 millions visitors or tourists a year. 10.Texas is the “Lone Star State”. 7 TEXAS AGRICULTURE Texas can be up to 120 degrees in the summer. Texas has 247,000 farms Top crops are cotton, corn, wheat and hay. Livestock includes cattle, sheep, goat and lamb. Texas is the top producer in the nation for cattle, cotton, wool.
