Reading Tuesday 9 th December 2015 Welcome!

New National Curriculum Key changes: - synthetic phonics - reading for pleasure - increased emphasis on reading poetry and fiction - greater emphasis on discussion and deeper questioning when reading - whole texts

In School Teaching reading: - phonics (letters and sounds, differentiated groups each day); - shared reading (during all lessons); - guided reading (once a week); - additional 1:1 reads whenever possible; - 1 discrete SPAG lesson each week + throughout all lessons.

At Home ‘Children are made readers on the laps of their parents’ Emilie Buchwald What you can do to support your child at home: - focus on letter sounds and names; - focus on high frequency words; - ask lots of questions when reading with your child to develop comprehension skills; - choose books that are interesting to your child (a range of genres e.g. non-fiction, fiction, poetry etc.); - set a routine for reading - for them to read to you and for you to read to them; - reading games - matching words, finding words, pairs game; - library visits

Five Finger Retelling Questions: What happened at the beginning of the story? Who are the main characters? What was the problem they needed to solve? What happened in the story? Ask about beginning, middle, and end How did they solve the problem?

REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: - sound out - re-read to check it makes sense - use pictures for clues - ask questions about the book - and most importantly ENJOY READING!
