3 Discourses There are three discourses in Deuteronomy. Turn to each of the 3 scriptures below and write: Next to Deuteronomy 1:6, write: “1st Discourse: Deut 1:6-Deut 4:40” Next to Deuteronomy 5:1, write: “2nd Discourse: Deut 5 - Deut 26” Next to Deuteronomy 27:1, write: “3rd Discourse: Deut 27 - Deut 30”

Moses’ Final Words Turn to and read some of Moses’ final words in Deuteronomy 4: 9-13. After, read this quote from Elder Ballard: “I encourage you to take time each week to be by yourself, away from television and the crowd. Have your scriptures with you and as you read, ponder, and pray, take an honest look at your life. Evaluate where you stand with the promises you have made with Heavenly Father. If you have a problem, talk it over with the Lord in earnest and humble prayer. Counsel with your parents; they will help you. Remember, only you know if you are living true to your covenants made with God.” By the way, Deuteronomy 4:30-31 is AMAZING! You might want to mark it

Favorite Scripture What is your all-time favorite scripture? The Jews have a favorite scripture - it’s in Deuteronomy 6:4-5. Turn there and read it. After, write down this cross reference: Matt 22:35-38. You’ll see that this verse is also a favorite of the Savior.

Favorite Scripture Read what the Jews were to do with their favorite passage: Read Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (look at the footnote about phylacteries in verse 8). After, read Deuteronomy 6:24 looking for a principle about commandments and protection.

Mawwage President Ezra Taft Benson (April 1988) taught, “You should qualify for the temple. Then you will know that there is no one good enough for you to marry outside the temple. If such individuals are that good, they will get themselves in a condition so that they too can be married in the temple.” Read Deuteronomy 7:3-6 and see what it says about marriage. How does this apply to you? By the way, what did the Israelites do for clothes during those 40 years? (see Deuteronomy 8:4)

RELAX Just relax! Take a look at all the pictures, look outside the windows, look at your classmates, think about the Savior, think about how good you’ve been about following the commandment of reading your scriptures, find the purpose of life, discover the cure for cancer or the cold – sit quietly and do whatever you want, this is the break station!

Think of a time when you felt really out of place Think of a time when you felt really out of place. Why did you feel this way? What was it that caused you to feel such? READ: Deuteronomy 14:2 List at least 5 things that make Mormons feel peculiar as member of the Church? (for example: tithing, word of wisdom…)

Skim over Deuteronomy 14: 4-20 Look For: What was it in these few verses that made them Holy and peculiar? CrossReference: Mosiah 13: 29-30 ~NOTE: When they sat down to eat food they had to ask themselves, is this ‘clean’…and then reflect on themselves; Am I clean before the Lord?

Just for fun… (Amazing Comparisons) Jesus was first and foremost the Son of God. Elvis first recorded with Sun Studios, which today are still considered to be his foremost recordings. Jesus was the lamb of God. Elvis had mutton chop sideburns. Jesus' Father is everywhere. Elvis' father was a drifter, and moved around quite a bit. Jesus was a carpenter. Elvis' favorite high school class was wood shop.  Jesus said: "Man shall not live by bread alone.“ Elvis liked his sandwiches with peanut butter and bananas. Jesus said: "Love thy neighbor." (Matthew 22:39) Elvis said: "Don't be cruel." (RCA, 1956) Jesus was part of the Trinity. Elvis' first band was a trio. Jesus walked on water. (Matthew 14:25) Elvis surfed. Elvis lived in Graceland in a nearly eastern state.

Holy and Peculiar Read: Deuteronomy 14:22-23 -How would living the Law of Tithing have made them a more Holy and peculiar people? -How has it helped you or someone you know in your life? We sin by refusing to help others in need when we are able to give.

READ Deuteronomy 14:28–29 LOOK FOR: some of the reasons the Israelites were to pay tithing. • According to verse 29, what blessing was promised to those who paid tithing? • How can obeying the law of tithing help us stand out from the world?

Just for fun… (English is Hard)   One may be that, and two may be those, Yet hat in the plural would never be hose. And the plural of cat would never be cose. We speak of brother, and also of brethren But though we say mother, we never say methren. The masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine, she, shis, and shim! English is funny; on that we agree, And alphabet soup makes no sense to me. We'll begin with a box: the plural is boxes, but the plural of ox is oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You'll find a lone mouse, or a nest of mice, But the plural of a house is houses, not hice. If I speak of a foot, you show me your feet And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth, and a set is called teeth, Why wouldn't the plural of both be called beeth? If the singulars this and the plural is these, Should the plural of kiss be written as keese?

Who benefits from paying a full-tithe. Read: Deuteronomy 15: 7-10 Who benefits from paying a full-tithe? Read: Deuteronomy 15: 7-10 *Paying of a full, honest, tithe will not only help us, but is essential at helping us to become holy and pure even as the Lord. How has paying tithing blessed you and others?

READ: Deuteronomy 17:1-5 -What was the consequence of sin READ: Deuteronomy 17:1-5 -What was the consequence of sin? CROSSREFERENCE: 1 Nephi 4:13

Lambs and Covenants How can the lost lamb in this painting represent each of us? What qualities or attributes of the Savior come to mind as you contemplate this picture? How does this picture relate to Deuteronomy 29 (chapter heading)?

Death of Moses Read Deuteronomy 34:5-6 “Moses was likewise taken up [like Elijah], though the scriptures say that the Lord buried him upon the mountain. Of course, the writer of that wrote according to his understanding; but Moses, like Elijah, was taken up without tasting death, because he had a mission to perform” (Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1054-56]. 2”107). One reason Moses was translated was so he could bestow priesthood keys upon Peter, James, and John during the Savior’s earthly ministry.
