Training oneself and one’s behavior, usually for personal improvement. You show self-discipline when you… End a date at a reasonable hour. Respect a partner’s choice to refrain from sexual activity. Plan a study session with a date when others are home. Walk away from violence or emotional abuse.

Your personal identity is how you view yourself as a unique individual. Your identity is formed by: 1.Your relationships 2.Your likes & dislikes 3.Your experiences with other people

Your identity also depends on your age and circumstances, and it will continue to change throughout your life. A gender role is the behavior and traits expected of a male or female. * Your first ideas of what it means to be male or female come from seeing how others define the gender. *Society as a whole has certain gender role expectations. **EACH INDIVIDUAL PERSON has opinions about what a male or female should be like. Both heredity and environment are believed to have an effect on how people acquire gender traits. Look at page 184 in your workbooks

GENDER ROLES HAVE CHANGED Remember that as society changes so do roles. Stereotypes- the ideas about the qualities or behaviors of a certain group of people, also change. In traditional gender roles, many people viewed the man as the sole or primary wage earner, the woman as the homemaker and took care of the children and family’s daily care. Today, it is more common for men to be directly involved in the care of their children. Many families today rely on the woman’s income.

While gender roles have evolved or changed, people still have different expectations for male and female behavior. Some people are accepting of new gender roles, while others prefer traditional ones
